Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Lakshmi Singh. Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas have reached a ceasefire deal. The agreement toward ending the war, which began October 7, 2023, is intended to happen in phases. In the first, Hamas promises to release 33 Israeli hostages in exchange for the freedom of many more Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody. Adi Alexander's son Adan was among those taken hostage. He spoke to NPR about the timing of the deal. Days before President elect Donald Trump takes office.

Trump says that publicly and openly, he doesn't want this war to land on his plate on January 20th. That was a clear message to all parties, including Israel and all the latest statement. They indicate that he will be tough with the friends and with the enemies. And we really happy about those statements.

The agreement follows weeks of intensive indirect negotiations involving envoys from both President Biden's administration and President Elect Trump's team. The talks were held in Qatar. Trump's pick for attorney general, Pam Bondi, is answering questions from senators in her confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill. Bondi says the Justice Department must be independent and that politics will not play a role. Here's NPR's Ryan Lucas.

Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee say Pam Bondi is highly qualified to lead the Justice Department. They are touting her long career as a local prosecutor in Florida, as well as her eight year stint as the state's attorney general. Democrats, however, have pressed Bondi on whether she will maintain the department's independence from the White House. Under questioning, Bondi has said the department must act independently. But she argued, echoing committee Republicans, that the department unfairly targeted Donald Trump with two prosecutions, and she pledged that she will end what she called the weaponization of the department if she's confirmed as attorney general. A new NPR PBS newsmaris poll out today finds that Americans have mixed feelings about some of Trump's priorities. NPR's Domenico Montanaro reports. The findings come a few days before Trump is inaugurated for a second time.

Trump has said he wants to pardon January 6th defendants, impose tariffs on other countries and conduct mass deportations of immigrants in the US without legal status. But the NPR poll of almost 1400 adults doesn't find a lot of support for those initiatives. More than 6 in 10 disapprove of Trump potentially pardoning people who were convicted of attacking the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. When it comes to tariffs, 48% think that they'd hur the US economy, while only 31% say that they think they'd help. And on deportations, people are evenly split. The survey has about a 3 percentage point margin of error. Domenico Montanaro, NPR News, Washington.

The Dow Jones industrial Average is up 652 points, or 1.5%. This is NPR News. The death toll from the Southern California fires has risen to 25 with more than 12,000 structures destroyed. Fire crews across the Los Angeles area have been making incremental gains toward containing two of the largest blazes, the Palisades and Eaton fires. The Cal Fire website reports Santa Ana winds are expected to subside, but humidity levels are expected to remain low. Meanwhile, meteorologists say fire related tornadoes are still very possible given the extreme conditions in the region. The Food and Drug Administration has banned what's called Red 3 in foods. NPR's Alison Aubry reports. The move comes in response to a petition from consumer groups.

Food and candy makers will be banned from using the petroleum based food dye known as Red 3. In announcing the order to revoke authorization, Jim Jones, the deputy commissioner for human foods at the fda, cited the Delaney Clause, a law that states FDA may not authorize a food additive if it has been found to cause cancer. Research shows Red 3 can cause cancer in male laboratory rats exposed to high levels. In recent years, there's also been evidence that RED3 and other petroleum dyes, which are used in thousands of food products from cereals to soda to candy, may also exacerbate behavioral issues in children such as hyperactivity.
