Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Lakshmi Singh. President Biden says talks mediated by Qatar, Egypt and the United States are resulting in a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Joe Biden
Biden.

Biden says the first phase will see some hostages freed by Hamas, Palestinian prisoners released and more humanitarian aid getting to civilians in Gaza. He also acknowledged the rare collaboration between negotiators from his administration and those on President Elect Trump's team.
Joe Biden
These past few days, we've been speaking as one team. This has been time of real turmoil in the Middle East. But as I prepare to leave office, our friends are strong, our enemies are weak, and there's genuine opportunities for a new future. In Lebanon, there's an opportunity for a future free from the grip of Hezbollah in Syria, a future free from the tyranny of Assad and for the Palestinian people, a credible, credible pathway to a state of their own and for the region, a future of normalization, integration of Israel and all its Arab neighbors, including Saudi Arabia.

Biden delivering remarks a short time ago from the White House. Despite this and other formal announcement, Israel says unresolved details remain. Now to the Southern California wildfires. An LA Times report is calling into question the city's preparation ahead of the wind fuel firestorm. NPR's Liz Baker tells us officials say that resources were pre positioned in high risk areas.
Liz Baker
The LA Times alleges that last Tuesday night as hurricane force gusts sent flames and embers towards residential neighborhoods, the LA Fire Department only deployed five out of 40 available engines and roughly 1,000 off duty firefighters were only called in after the firestorm had already gotten out of control. In a press conference, Louisiana Fire Department Chief Kristen Crowley responded, we follow a system.
Kristen Crowley
We did that. We pre deployed the necessary resources. Knowing that or not knowing, I should be very specific in where a fire might break out in the city.
Liz Baker
When pushed for comment, Louisiana Mayor Karen Bass said, quote, the buck always stops with me, but refused to elaborate further. Liz Baker, NPR News, Los Angeles.

U.S. consumer prices are up 2.9% from a year ago. Here's NPR's Rafael Nam.
Rafael Nam
Inflation is proving to be pretty stubborn. Yes, it has eased a lot from the very high level of 9.1% over a couple years ago. A big reason for the uptick last month was gas prices, but there was some good news. Factoring out gas and food prices, inflation came below expectations. Overall, though, it means the Federal Reserve may have to keep interest rates higher for a little longer, and the outlook for inflation is very uncertain. President Elect Donald Trump says he wants tariffs and mass deportations, which economists say could make inflation worse. Rafael Nam, NPR News.

You're listening to NPR News. The FDA wants a new nutrition label on the front of most packaged food and drinks sold in the U.S. nPR's Maria Godoy reports.
Maria Godoy
The proposed label would let consumers see at a glance whether a packaged food or drink contains low, medium or highly levels of sodium, added sugar and saturated fat, as well as the percent of the daily value of these nutrients in the product. Rebecca Buckner of the FDA says a large body of research has linked over consumption of salt, sugar and saturated fat to chronic diseases, including heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
Kristen Crowley
And yet the vast majority of Americans.
Rebecca Buckner
Exceed current recommended limits for all these nutrients.
Maria Godoy
The proposed label won't be appearing in packaged foods anytime soon. If the rule is finalized, food manufacturers would have three to four years to add the new labels. Maria Godoy, NPR News.
