Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. President Biden delivered his final address to the nation tonight. In his farewell speech from the Oval Office, Biden said he sees a concentration of power in the hands of few ultra wealthy people that could have dangerous consequences.
Joe Biden
An oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedoms, and a fair shot for everyone to get ahead.

Biden's address came just hours after he announced that a ceasefire agreement had been reached between Israel and Hamas. NPR's Kat Lansdorf reports. The multi phase deal is set to take effect on Sunday.
Kat Lansdorf
The first phase of the deal is a six week ceasefire and it's going to allow for the staggered release of 33 of the remaining 98 Israeli hostages in Gaza. They'll be exchanged for around 1,000 Palestinian detainees over time during those six weeks. That phase will also allow for more entry of much needed humanitarian aid into Gaza. The details of the mechanics of that haven't really been made public yet, but much of it will be coming in through the Rafah crossing in southern Gaza.

From Egypt, NPR's Kat Lahnstorff reporting from Tel Aviv. Israel has yet to sign off on the agreement, saying it's still finalizing the framework. University of California researchers say the deadly wildfires raging across Los Angeles county have been exacerbated by Climate Climate Change. NPR's Kirk Sigler reports. At least two dozen people have died in the fires.
Kirk Sigler
UCLA climate scientists are linking climate change to the extreme dryness in the chaparral hills in and around Los Angeles. Their research shows that when the brush fires ignited last week, vegetation was 25% drier than it would have been without factoring in climate change. Scientists say these fires would have still been dangerous, but maybe not quite as big or have seen the intensity or rapid growth. This marks a change in communication lately in the scientific community, which had shied away from tying any one disaster to climate change. But scientists now are pinning specific events like heat waves, hurricanes and fires directly to rising global temperatures as a result of human activity. Kirk zigler, NPR News.

SpaceX is preparing for another Starship test flight on Thursday. NPR's Giles Snyder reports. The mega rocket is scheduled to lift off from a facility in South Texas.
Giles Snyder
It will be its seventh test flight since 2023 as SpaceX sets its sights on developing a vehicle capable of carrying people to Mars. The flight is expected to last just over an hour and will feature another attempt to catch the huge super heavy booster back at the South Texas launch site, as the company did back in October for the first time.

That's NPR's Jael Snyder reporting. This is NPR News in Washington. The World Health Organization has announced a suspected outbreak of Marburg virus disease in Tanzania. The virus is a cousin of Ebola. NPR's Gabriela Emanuel reports. The virus is known for being very deadly.
Gabriela Emanuel
There are nine suspected cases, and eight of those people have already died, including some healthcare workers. According to the who, each patient experienced typical Marburg symptoms, quick onset of fever, chills, headache and then vomiting and diarrhea. Though Marburg is usually deadly, quick and high quality medical care can make a big difference. Stanford physician Abrar Khan studies the Marburg virus.

Now that we know it's happening, resources are going to be mobilized quickly. Tanzania has dealt with this before. All the countries in the region are obviously on high alert.

In recent years, there's been an uptick in Marburg outbreaks, mostly in Africa. Gabriela Emanuel, NPR News.
