Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. Israel's cabinet has approved a ceasefire deal with Hamas. They also say the agreement will take effect on Sunday. NPR's Greg Myrey reports that this could bring an end to more than 15 months of fighting in Gaza.
Greg Myre
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet met into the early hours of Saturday before finally giving approval to the cease fire agreement with Hamas. Hamas has already said it supports the deal. It's now set to take effect Sunday when Hamas is expected to release three Israeli hostages and Israel plans to free 95 Palestinian prisoners and detainees. The first phase of the agreement is set to last six weeks. The two sides will then have to hold additional negotiations to work out the release of the remaining Israeli hostages and to free more Palestinian prisoners. The 15 months of fighting has been the deadliest ever between Israel and Hamas. Greg Myre, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

Mass deportations of people in the country without legal status could start as soon as next week. That's what President Elect Donald Trump has promised over the last few months ahead of his inauguration, which takes place on Monday. As NPR's Sergio Martinez Beltran reports, immigrant rights groups are bracing for Trump's actions.
Felicia Gomez
National and local organizations advocating for immigrants say they are anticipating a range of scenarios.

Much of the US Will be hit with frigid temperatures this weekend. That's thanks to a polar vortex moving down from the Arctic. Millions of Americans living from the Rockies on eastward could experience wind chills that will be as cold as minus 30. NPR's Jacqueline Diaz has more on that story.
Jacqueline Diaz
There will be relatively few areas in the US Free from bone chilling cold in the coming days. The National Weather Service warns the polar vortex will bring the coldest air this season. Areas unused to such cold, like the south and Mid Atlantic, are expected to get freezing or below freezing temps. And it's set to stick around for several days, affecting three of four NFL playoff games. It's even forced a change of plans for President elect Donald Trump's inauguration. The forecast of life threatening cold has pushed the event indoors. Jacqueline Diaz, NPR News.

And I'm Dale Willman. You're listening to NPR News. In a statement on social media, TikTok just announced it will shut down in the US on Sunday if the Biden White House doesn't intervene to stop a federal ban on that video appeal. There was a rally on Wall street today that pushed stocks up. The Nasdaq was up slightly more than 1.5%, the Dow up by 334 points, and the S&P 500 closed up 59 points. The federal Trade Commission is suing Pepsi over its pricing deals with its biggest client, which industry experts say is Walmart. As NPR Zelena Selyuk reports, the case is part of a recent revival of a long dormant antitrust law to try to crack down on high grocery prices.
Sergio Martinez Beltran
The FTC says Pepsi gives its biggest retailer discounts special promotions that it does not offer to the giant's smaller rivals. The FTC says this violates a law from the 1930s that had not been enforced for decades until recently when the agency sued the largest US Alcohol distributor. It's called Southern Glaziers. It's unclear how the Pepsi case will proceed under President Trump. The incoming Republican FTC chair has suggested he was open to reviving the old antitrust law, but he voted against the Pepsi lawsuit. Pepsi says the case is wrong on the facts and the law and that its practices are in line with industry norms. Alina Seluk, NPR News, Washington.
