Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dan Ronan. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says an agreement to return Hamas held hostages in the Gaza Strip has been reached and the two step process, process to secure Israeli approval will begin on Friday. The country's security cabinet is to meet and then it will be presented to other government leaders to approve the package. The announcement comes after a one day delay when Netanyahu said there was a last minute snag in final negotiations to reach a ceasefire and secure the release of the remaining hostages taken in the aftermath of the October 7th attack against Israel. Meanwhile, relief organizations are preparing to once again assist the hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians. Anton Renard is director of the World Food Program in Gaza.

Pro Russian social media accounts have been spreading false claims tying the wildfires in Los angeles to Ukraine. NPR's Haoying Yang reports.
Hua Jinnan
After the fires erupted, an apparently baseless story that eight Ukrainian generals lost homes in the fire started circulating in pro Russian telegram channels. It was amplified by Russian state media as well as influencers, including an American. The influencers helped it spread further, ultimately getting over a million views on X, the social platform formerly known as Twitter. Ukraine's government says there is no evidence that Ukrainian generals lost homes in the fire. Researchers say it looks like another part of Russia's years long campaign to claim that the Ukrainian government is corrupt and doesn't deserve foreign aid in the war between the two countries. China will send its vice president Han Yang to attend President Elect Donald Trump's inauguration next week. NPR's John Ruwich reports.
John Ruwich
Han Zheng does not hold a position in the ruling Communist Party's top leadership and the vice presidency is largely ceremonial in China. Still, his attendance is a gesture of goodwill will to the incoming administration. Trump had invited Chinese leader Xi Jinping, although analysts said that was a long shot. The state news agency Xinhua cited a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson as saying China is willing to enhance dialogue and communication with the new U.S. administration. It hopes the two sides can properly manage differences, expand mutually beneficial cooperation and jointly promote the stable, healthy and sustainable development of China. The three major stock indexes closed down Thursday. The Dow, the Nasdaq and the S and P were all fractionally lower. Some analysts say that they expect markets to trade in a narrow range for the near future until there's more clarity about the incoming Trump administration. From Washington, you're listening to NPR News. For the third year in a row, China's population has fallen this as the country ages and deaths outpace births. China's population in 2024 declined by near 1.4 million people, compared to 2023's number. The country's total population exceeds 1.4 billion, slightly behind the world's most populated nation, India. China's population decline comes at a time when many East Asian nations, including Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and others, have seen their birth rates decline. 20% of China's population is above age 60, and by 2030, it'll be more than 30%, leading government officials and others to consider changes to the retirement ages to keep older workers on the job longer. Filmmaker David lynch has died at the age of 78. As Kyle Norris reports, he will be remembered for his surreal style of storytelling.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a breakthrough in the long-standing hostage situation involving Hamas-held individuals in the Gaza Strip. According to Netanyahu, an agreement has been reached to facilitate the return of these hostages through a two-step process. The first step involves a meeting of Israel's security cabinet scheduled for Friday, after which the proposal will be presented to other government leaders for approval. This announcement follows a brief delay caused by a "last-minute snag" in the negotiations aimed at establishing a ceasefire and securing the release of hostages taken during the October 7th attacks on Israel.

NPR's Haoying Yang reports on a disinformation campaign orchestrated by pro-Russian social media accounts, which falsely linked the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles to Ukraine. The fabricated narrative claimed that eight Ukrainian generals lost their homes in the fires, a story that quickly spread through pro-Russian Telegram channels.
Details of the Campaign:

The baseless story was amplified by Russian state media and various influencers, including an American, leading to over a million views on X (formerly Twitter). The Ukrainian government has firmly denied these claims, stating there is no evidence to support the loss of Ukrainian generals' homes in the fires. Researchers suggest this propaganda is part of Russia's longstanding effort to portray the Ukrainian government as corrupt and undermine its legitimacy in the international arena.

NPR's John Ruwich discusses China's decision to send Vice President Han Yang to attend then-President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration next week.
Diplomatic Significance:
Reporter: John Ruwich
Timestamp: [02:20]
Han Yang's role as vice president in China is largely ceremonial, and he does not hold a position within the Communist Party's top leadership. Nevertheless, his attendance is seen as a gesture of goodwill towards the incoming U.S. administration. Although Trump had extended an invitation to Chinese leader Xi Jinping, analysts considered it unlikely that Xi would attend.
The Chinese state news agency, Xinhua, conveyed that China is "willing to enhance dialogue and communication with the new U.S. administration." The aim is to manage differences appropriately, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and jointly promote "the stable, healthy and sustainable development of China."

The U.S. stock market experienced a modest decline on Thursday, with the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P 500 indexes all closing fractionally lower. Financial analysts predict that markets may continue to trade within a narrow range in the near future. This cautious outlook is attributed to uncertainties surrounding the incoming Trump administration, with investors awaiting greater clarity on its policies and economic strategies.
In a significant demographic shift, China has experienced its third consecutive year of population decline. The nation's population decreased by approximately 1.4 million in 2024 compared to the previous year, bringing the total population to just over 1.4 billion. This decline places China slightly behind India as the world's most populous country.
Implications of an Aging Population:
The trend reflects a broader pattern seen in several East Asian nations, including Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong, where birth rates have been steadily decreasing. Currently, 20% of China's population is over the age of 60, and this figure is projected to exceed 30% by 2030. In response, Chinese government officials and policymakers are considering adjustments to retirement ages to retain older workers in the workforce longer, aiming to mitigate the economic impacts of an aging society.
