NPR News in Washington, I'm Jeanine Hurst. President elect Donald Trump holds events this weekend around the Washington area ahead of his swearing in ceremony Monday that's now been moved inside the Capitol because of the weather. Snow is forecast in the D.C. area tomorrow, followed by frigid temperatures on Monday. Meanwhile, his incoming border czar Tom Homan, says the new administration is getting ready for large scale immigration raids in several cities next week. Homan says starting Tuesday, they'll start going after people who are in the country illegally.
Tom Homan
Well, we're telling ICE you're going to enforce immigration law without apology. You're going to public, you're going to concentrate on the worst first, public safety threats first. But no one's off the table. If they're in the country legally, they.
Jeanine Herbst
Got a problem speaking there on Fox News. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the raids will last all week. A ceasefire is set to go into effect in Gaza tomorrow between Hamas and Israel, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an address to his country today that he considers it a temporary ceasefire. NPR's Kat Lansdorf has more from Tel Aviv.
Kat Lansdorf
The ceasefire is scheduled to begin at 8:30am local time. Later in the day, several Israeli hostages are expected to released. In exchange, nearly 100 Palestinian detainees will be released from Israeli jails and into the occupied West Bank. The ceasefire deal comes after more than 15 months of war in Gaza. However, the fighting continues for now. At least 122 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since the deal was announced, including many children. According to Gaza Civil Defense. The Israeli military says it's been targeting Hamas sites and trying to avoid civilians. Only hours after Israel's government approved the deal, sirens sounded across the country. Houthis launched a missile from Yemen. According to the military, it was intercepted. Kat Lansdorf, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

A nationwide ban on TikTok is set to take effect tomorrow. Congress passed the ban on the popular video app last year, citing concerns about national security. Now many Americans are trading one Chinese social media app for another. NPR's Rachel Treisman has more on RedNote this week.
Rachel Treisman
The Apple Store's top downloaded free app is Xiaohangshu, or as it's called in English, redNote. The app is considered China's version of Instagram with a focus on videos, chats and E commerce. Most of RedNote's 300 million monthly users are in China, and most of its content is in Mandarin. It is subject to government censorship, though its new US users don't seem to mind. Americans are downloading RedNote in droves ahead of Sunday, when TikTok will be required to shut down in the US if its China based parent company doesn't divest. Rachel Treisman, NPR News.

Meanwhile, President elect Trump tells NBC News he will, quote, most likely give it 90 days to work out a deal. You're listening to NPR News from Washington. The Department of Justice is accusing Walgreens of knowingly filling millions of prescriptions without checking to see if they were legitimate. Officials say it's been going on for more than a decade and includes dangerous amounts of opioids. The suit says Walgreens, one of the country's biggest pharmacy chains, also pressured pharmacists to fill prescriptions with, quote, clear red flags that they were likely to be unlawful. The DOJ alleges some Walgreen patients died of overdose deaths shortly after getting invalid prescriptions filled at that pharmacy chain. Walgreens says it stands behind its pharmacists with new movies and TV shows featuring Captain America, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four and Superman, 2025 may be the year of the superhero. NPR's Eric Duggans reports.

Daredevil Born Again joins several high profile films and TV series coming in 2025 featuring characters from comic books including Captain Brave New World, the Fantastic Four, First Steps and a new version of Superman. Companies like Marvel and DC are working to restore franchises that have stumbled. And there's a hope in Hollywood for a return to audiences flocking to theaters and TV screens for big releases. NPR News Now, hosted by Jeanine Herbst, delivered a comprehensive update on the latest national and international developments, ranging from political maneuvers in Washington to significant shifts in the entertainment industry. Below is a detailed summary of the key topics covered, enriched with notable quotes and structured for clarity.
Weather-Related Changes to Inauguration Events
President-elect Donald Trump was actively engaging with supporters around the Washington area as he prepared for his swearing-in ceremony. Originally scheduled for an outdoor event, the inauguration was moved indoors due to forecasted severe weather conditions, including snow and frigid temperatures expected in the D.C. area on Monday.
Immigration Raids Announced by Incoming Border Czar Tom Homan
Tom Homan, the incoming border czar, announced that the new administration is gearing up for large-scale immigration raids across several cities starting next week. These operations are targeted at individuals residing in the country illegally.
Tom Homan [00:51]: "Well, we're telling ICE you're going to enforce immigration law without apology. You're going to public, you're going to concentrate on the worst first, public safety threats first. But no one's off the table. If they're in the country legally, they are."
Homan emphasized a stringent approach, prioritizing public safety threats while ensuring that all individuals, regardless of status, are subject to enforcement actions. This aggressive stance reflects the administration's commitment to its immigration agenda.
Ceasefire Between Hamas and Israel
In international news, a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel was set to commence the following day. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described it as a temporary measure amidst ongoing hostilities.
Kat Lansdorf Reports from Tel Aviv [01:23]
Kat Lansdorf provided on-the-ground insights from Tel Aviv, detailing the terms and current status of the ceasefire.
Ceasefire Details: Scheduled to begin at 8:30 AM local time, the deal includes the release of several Israeli hostages in exchange for nearly 100 Palestinian detainees being moved from Israeli jails to the occupied West Bank.
Ongoing Violence: Despite the agreement, fighting persisted, resulting in the deaths of at least 122 Palestinians since the announcement, including numerous children, per Gaza Civil Defense reports.
Netanyahu reiterated the temporary nature of the ceasefire, stating that the Israeli military remains focused on combating Hamas, despite claims of targeting military sites and avoiding civilian casualties.
Kat Lansdorf [01:23]: "Only hours after Israel's government approved the deal, sirens sounded across the country. Houthis launched a missile from Yemen. According to the military, it was intercepted."
The situation remained volatile, with external actors like the Houthis from Yemen attempting to disrupt the fragile pause in hostilities.
Implementation of Nationwide TikTok Ban
A significant policy shift is underway as a nationwide ban on TikTok was set to take effect the following day. Congress had passed the ban last year, citing national security concerns tied to TikTok's Chinese ownership.
Rise of RedNote as TikTok’s Alternative
As TikTok faces restrictions, American users have swiftly migrated to alternative platforms, with RedNote (Xiaohangshu) emerging as a prominent substitute.
Rachel Treisman Reports [02:29]
Rachel Treisman elaborated on this digital migration and the implications for social media consumption in the U.S.
RedNote Overview: Known as China’s equivalent to Instagram, RedNote emphasizes video content, chats, and e-commerce. It boasts approximately 300 million monthly users, primarily in China, with content predominantly in Mandarin.
U.S. Adoption: Despite being subject to Chinese government censorship, RedNote has seen a surge in American downloads as users seek alternatives to TikTok ahead of the impending ban.
Rachel Treisman [02:29]: "Americans are downloading RedNote in droves ahead of Sunday, when TikTok will be required to shut down in the US if its China-based parent company doesn't divest."
Trump’s Stance on TikTok Ban
President-elect Trump indicated resistance to the ban's enforcement timeline, suggesting a possible extension to allow negotiations.
Trump [02:11]: "Most likely give it 90 days to work out a deal."
This statement underscores the administration's openness to finding a compromise, albeit within a framework that addresses national security apprehensions.
Allegations Against Walgreens
The Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a lawsuit against Walgreens, accusing the pharmacy giant of knowingly dispensing millions of illegitimate prescriptions over the past decade. These prescriptions predominantly involved dangerous quantities of opioids, contributing to overdose deaths among patients.
Key Points of the DOJ Suit
Unchecked Prescriptions: Walgreens allegedly failed to verify the legitimacy of prescriptions, allowing the distribution of potentially unlawful and hazardous opioid dosages.
Pharmacist Pressure: The suit claims that Walgreens pressured its pharmacists to fulfill prescriptions flagged with “clear red flags,” undermining their professional judgment and ethical standards.
Impact on Public Health: The lax prescription practices are linked to numerous overdose deaths, highlighting a critical public health crisis exacerbated by pharmaceutical negligence.
Walgreens’ Defense
In response, Walgreens has defended its pharmacists, emphasizing their commitment to responsible dispensing practices. The company also shifted its promotional focus to popular culture, featuring Marvel superheroes in its marketing campaigns.
Eric Deggans [04:03]: "Walgreens says it stands behind its pharmacists with new movies and TV shows featuring Captain America, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four and Superman, 2025 may be the year of the superhero."
This strategy aims to rebrand Walgreens amidst the legal challenges, leveraging the widespread appeal of superhero franchises to restore consumer trust and engagement.
Marvel and DC’s Revitalized Franchises
The year 2025 marks a significant comeback for superhero narratives in the entertainment industry. Both Marvel and DC are spearheading a resurgence with new series and films aimed at rekindling audience interest.
Highlights from Eric Deggans’ Report [04:03]
Unnamed Speaker [04:12]: "I was raised to believe in grace, but I was also raised to believe in retribution."
This quote encapsulates the thematic depth expected in the new series, blending traditional superhero elements with more nuanced character development.
Upcoming Releases: Beyond Daredevil, 2025 will see releases featuring Captain Brave New World, the Fantastic Four, First Steps, and a reimagined Superman.
Industry Outlook: Companies like Marvel and DC are actively working to rejuvenate their franchises, addressing past setbacks and aiming to capture both theatrical and television audiences.
Hope for Hollywood’s Future
The strategic focus on big, traditional events and high-profile releases signals Hollywood’s anticipation of a strong rebound in viewership and box office performance.
Eric Deggans [04:17]: "Forget about superhero hero fatigue. Daredevil Born Again joins several high profile films and TV series coming in 2025..."
This optimistic outlook suggests a confidence in the enduring popularity of superhero genres and their ability to draw audiences back to theaters and streaming platforms.
