Live from NPR News. In Washington, I'm Dan Ronan. President Trump is threatening new tariffs on a block of NATO nations in his effort to purchase Greenland. But some Senate Republicans and Democrats aren't buying the White House's aggressive bid take over that island. NPR's Luke Garrett reports.
Luke Garrett
In a social media post announcing new tariffs, Trump said the US Needs Greenland to protect the island from Russia and China. But vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee Mark Warner denied this on cbs.

The only security threat to Greenland right now is the United States.
Luke Garrett
In his effort to take over Greenland, Trump has not taken military seizure off the table. Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky told NBC the GOP controlled Congress doesn't back.

An invasion on the war powers are.
Larry Romalo
On militarily invading Greenland.
Dan Ronan
I've heard of no Republican support for that.
Luke Garrett
When the Senate returns next week, Paul and Democratic Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia hope to pass a war powers resolution that would limit Trump's ability to invade Greenland. Luke Garrett, NPR News, Washington.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Fry is criticizing the possibility of active duty troops being sent to Minnesota, saying it's unconstitutional and ridiculous. President Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection act in response to the protests that have taken place in the city since the killing of Renee Goode almost two weeks ago by an ICE agent. The president has since appeared to back off from that threat. Meanwhile, residents and businesses say they're feeling the impact of the ICE operations on their businesses. Larry Romalo runs a business and a restaurant in Minneapolis.

Everybody's scared. I mean, not just, you know, the people that are scared of immigration status, but everybody's scared.

Meanwhile, Sunday, members of the local branch of the national association of Letter Carriers joined a rally in a march to demand that ICE agents leave Minneapolis. The Syrian government forces have taken control of another major city in northern Syria after clashes with the Kurdish led Fortis forces, I should say. NPR's Jawad Rizkalo reports.

The Syrian army entered the Arab city of Tabqa early Sunday. The city had been held by the US backed Kurdish led Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, since 2017 when they pushed ISIS out of it. Fighting has lasted more than a week. The SDF already withdrew from Aleppo suburbs and towns further east, leaving Tabqa as the last city they controlled west of the Euphrates River. A local man, speaking anonymously, fearing potential SDF reprisal, said his cousins joined local Arab tribal fighters in attacking SDF positions before government forces entered. We spoke to him as he was celebrating liberation at a central roundabout in the city. Syrian state media later announced a ceasefire deal. The SDF has yet to confirm. Joad Rskalla, NPR News, Beirut.

Ukrainian officials say the latest Russian attacks have left thousands of people without power. It's NPR. For the second year in a row, a small section of the state of Florida has gotten snow. This time the snow fell Sunday in the Western Panhandle as the frigid air briefly turned the rain showers into snowfalls. Parts of nearby Alabama got nearly 2 inches of SN. The music distribution platform Bandcamp has announced a new strict policy towards generative AI. The guidelines differ widely from the AI approach taken by other major streaming services and record labels. NPR's Isabella Gomez San Martino has more.

Bandcamp says it will not allow any music or audio created entirely by AI or with substantial AI usage. On its website, Bandcamp is known for allowing fans to purchase music and merch directly from independent artists. In announcing the new policy, the platform states that this is an essential step to, quote, putting human creativity first. In contrast, Spotify, the biggest streaming service in the world, has faced criticisms in recent months for not clearly labeling or flagging music created with generative AI. Two major labels, Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group, have also signed licensing deals with AI music generators. Isabella Gomez Sarmiento, NPR News.

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It's the federal holiday to honor the memory of the civil rights leader who was assassinated in 1968. His daughter, the Reverend Bernice King, says she believes the holiday is a saving grace toward the country with the political divisions. From Washington, this is NPR news.
