I'm Giles Snyder. The first trial stemming from the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, has ended in an acquittal. The State of Texas vs. Adrian Gonzalez. In each of the 29 counts, we the jury find the defendant, Adrian Gonzalez, not guilty. Judge Sid Harrow reading the verdict from the bench in Corpus Christi, the jury deliberated for more than seven hours before unanimously clearing Gonzalez of all 29 counts of child endangerment or abandonment. His trial was the first stemming from the law enforcement response to the shooting at Robb elementary that left 19 children and two teachers dead. He was accused of failing to confront the gunman. Former school district police chief Pet is expected to be tried on similar charges later this year. He has pleaded not guilty. A DHS spokesperson confirmed plans to expand detention space, but declined to provide details except to say, quote, these will not be warehouses, adding they are well structured and meet regular detention standards. And DHS said it's using funding from the spending package called the Big Beautiful Bill to pay for new construction, but did not specify the cost or identify the exact locations of the new detention centers. El Paso is the site of the largest facility in the country. In the last two months, there have been three detainee deaths. About 3,000 people are held at the massive Fort Bliss tent camp run by a private contractor. For NPR News, I'm Angela Kocherga in El Paso.

To the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where President Trump Trump says he has agreed to what he called a framework of a future deal on Greenland. NPR's Franco Ordonez reports that Trump is also abandoning his threat to impose new tariffs on multiple European countries over the issue.

President Trump announced on social media that the US Formed the framework, which relates to the entire Arctic region, after meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. It's not clear what this framework would entail, but the possibility of a deal represents a major breakthrough. After weeks of escalating rhetoric by the president charging that the US Needs ownership and control of the Danish territory, he says Greenland is a national security issue for the US Trump had threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark, the UK and six other countries that had planned to take part in military exercises around Greenland. In Davos, President Trump said he will meet Thursday with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky as part of the administration's ongoing effort to broker a deal to end the war Ukraine. The meeting comes as US Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are expected to meet with Russia's Vladimir Putin. This is npr. Rescuers in New Zealand are searching for survivors following Wednesday's landslide at a campground at a popular tourist spot on the northern coast. Authorities say the number of people missing are in the single figures. Heavy rains in New Zealand have caused widespread damage and left thousands without power. A senior United nations official calling Israel's demolition of its East Jerusalem compound illegal, saying it's leased the land from the country of Jordan for decades. Israel says it owns the land, setting up what NPR's Emily Fang reports is another showdown between Israel and the UN.

UN Commissioner Philip Lazzarini wrote Israel's seizure of his agency UNRWA's premises in East Jerusalem broke international law and said Israel's presence in East Jerusalem, which it annexed in a 1967 war, was illegal. Meanwhile, far right Israeli Minister Itamar Ben GVIR called the demolition this week a day for celebration because Israel has accused UNRWA employees of participating in the Hamas led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, something UNRWA denies.
