Details@Capital1.com Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. President Trump is rolling out the inaugural members of his Board of Peace. He's at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. He initially presented the board today as a group that would oversee Gaza after the ceasefire there took hold. He's expanded that vision to include permanent member countries of a board that he controls indefinitely. Trump insists he'll work with the United nations now to settle world conflicts.

As everyone can see today, the first steps toward a brighter day for the Middle east and a much safer future for the world are unfolding right before your very eyes. Together, we are in a position to have an incredible chance. I don't even call it a chance. I think it's going to happen to end decades of suffering, stop generations of hatred and bloodshed and forge a beautiful, everlasting and glorious peace.

More than a dozen countries have signed up. The European Union will hold a summit today over President Trump's threats to annex Greenland. Trump told the Davos summit yesterday that he would not use military force to do that, but he says he's agreed to the framework of a future deal for Greenland. A Texas jury has acquitted a former Uvalde school police officer over his response to the deadly mass school shooting. Texas Public Radio's David Martin Davies reports.

Adrian Gonzalez was the first law enforcement officer to arrive at Robb elementary on May 24, 2022, when a gunman was shooting at the school. Prosecutors alleged Gonzalez hesitated and did not do his duty. The gunman was able to enter a classroom and kill 19 students and two teachers. After deliberating for more than seven hours, the Nueces county jury found Gonzalez not guilty in the 29 counts of child endangerment. This was the first trial over the response to the Uvalde attack. Former school district police Chief Pete Arredondo is also expected to be tried. For NPR News, I'm David Martin Davies in San Antonio.

Vice President Vance is due in Minnesota today. Minnesota Public Radio's Peter Cox has more.
Peter Cox
The White House says Vance will hold a roundtable meeting with local leaders and community members and, quote, deliver remarks focused on restoring law and order in Minnesota. Since early December, ICE agents have been accused of heavy handed tactics, racial profiling and arresting U.S. citizens after an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Macklin Goode. Vance defended the agent's actions.
Vice President Vance
I can believe that her death is a tragedy while also recognizing that it's a tragedy of her own making and a tragedy of the far left who has marshaled an entire movement, a lunatic fringe, against our law enforcement officers.
Peter Cox
Vance also visited Minneapolis in September after a mass shooting at a Catholic church and school. For NPR News, I'm Peter Cox in St. Paul.

You're listening to NPR News from Washington. Tens of millions of people are under winter storm cautions today. From eastern Arizona to the Great Lakes. Extreme cold warnings are up for the Northern Plains. There, it will feel as cold as 45 degrees below zero today. NPR's Greg Allen reports. A winter storm will bundle the frigid temperatures and moisture to wallop much of the country over the weekend.
Greg Allen
The winter storm will develop over the Southwest on Friday and begin moving east. Frigid temperatures and significant accumulations of snow and ice are possible throughout the southeastern US Jason Furtado is an associate professor of meteorology at the University of Oklahoma.

We're going to see snow and ice dipping way down into the south. We're talking down into, you know, areas of Oklahoma, Texas, over to, you know, the Southeast. But also it's the tremendous cold coming in behind it.
Greg Allen
Southern states may see days of single digit temperatures with wind chills as low as 10 below zero by Sunday. Forecasts show the system moving into the Northeast and dropping as much as 2ft of snow in some places. Greg Allen, NPR News.

Former special counsel Jack Smith will testify publicly today before the House Judiciary Committee. Republican lawmakers want to question Smith about his investigations into Donald Trump. That includes for Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents and for alleged efforts to subvert the 2020 presidential election. The U.S. supreme Court heard arguments yesterday on President Trump's efforts to fire a governor of the Federal Reserve Board. Most of the justices seem to express skepticism that President Trump has this power. I'm Korva Coleman, NPR News in Washington.
