Millions of people across the United States from Texas to New York are bracing for a long lasting Arctic blast of snow, ice and sub zero temperatures despite balloons losing attempts. In Minneapolis this hour, Large crowds staging protests. Clergy, labor unions and hundreds of businesses closed today are opposing the surge in federal immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota. NPR's Meg Anderson reports.

Organizers of the protests and economic blackout are demanding that immigration officers leave the state. For more than two weeks, people in the Twin Cities have been on edge and as officers with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ice, escalate aggressive tactics against Minnesotans, Martha Bardwell, a Minneapolis pastor, is participating in the day's events.

Community members have also been coordinating a massive network of resistance, delivering food to people afraid to leave their homes, standing guard outside schools, and loudly alerting the neighborhood when federal agents are nearby. Meg Anderson, NPR News.

A U.S. official not authorized to speak publicly tells NPR that a battalion with the 4th Infantry Division out of Fort Carson, Colorado, has received a prepare to deploy order to Minnesota. Previously, an army military police battalion stationed at Fort Bragg received the same order. Also last Friday, 1500 soldiers with the Army's 11th Airborne Division in Alaska were told to prepare to deploy to Minnesota. The Trump administration is reviewing all federal funding sent to 14 Democratic states and the District of Columbia. NPR's Tamara Keith reports. This comes as President Trump pledged to pull federal funding from so called sanctuary cities and states.

A memo from the White House Budget office ordered the review and says the information will be used to reduce the improper and fraudulent use of federal funds. It says this is a data gathering exercise only. But earlier this month, President Trump made the following pledge.

Today they heard a recorded message from President Trump and a live speech from Vice President J.D. vance. Vance announced an expansion of the Mexico City policy restricting US Aid to international organizations.

The administration says the funding ban now extends to DEI and what Vance called radical gender ideologies. The Justice Department says it has arrested a Canadian former Olympic snowboarder wanted on drug trafficking and other charges. Authorities say Ryan Wedding was arrested last night in Mexico City. NPR's Ryan Lucas has details.

Ryan Wedding represented Canada at the 2002 Winter Olympics. He was indicted in the United States in 2024 on federal criminal charges, including cocaine conspiracy and murder. Prosecutors allege that Wedding heads a drug trafficking network that has shipped massive amounts of cocaine to the United States and Canada and has orchestrated multiple murders to further its drug business. The FBI added Wedding to its top 10 most wanted fugitive list in March. And in November, the State Department upped the reward money for information leading to his arrest to $15 million. Now Attorney General Pam Bondi says Wedding is in custody and has been flown to the United States to face justice. Ryan Lucas, NPR News, Washington.
