Live from NPR News in New York City, I'm Dwahili Sai Kautau. ICE and local law enforcement are investigating an incident near Vail, Colorado. That's where a Latino advocacy nonprofit alleged that, quote, racist playing cards were left in abandoned cars after the drivers have been retained. Aspen Public Radio's Hayley Zander reports.

The ace of spades is sometimes called the death card. Some US Soldiers used these cards during the Vietnam War, attaching them to the bodies of dead enemy soldiers. The CIA said it was effective psychological warfare at the time. Printed on the cards found this week were the phone number and physical address of an ICE processing center in Aurora. It was unclear if ICE officials left the cards. An ICE spokesperson condemned the behavior in an email Friday afternoon and said the agency is investigating. The Eagle County Sheriff's Office is also looking into the incident and called it disturbing. For NPR News, I'm Hallie Zander.

In Aspen, the US Military has carried out another lethal strike on a small boat allegedly carrying drugs. NPR's Quill Lawrence reports. The White House says it's at war with drug cartels.

Since September, the US military has killed more than 100 people and destroyed dozens of small boats transiting what the Pentagon claims are known drug trafficking routes. The Trump administration says it can kill the crews of these boats on suspicion, even if they're unarmed, because it has declared war on transnational drug cartels. Critics say that's extrajudicial killing or simply murder. In the latest strike, U.S. southern Command posted a grainy video on social media showing a small boat exploding into flames. Southcom said two crew were killed. The US Coast Guard confirmed to NPR that it was engaged in a search and rescue operation for one survivor. Quill Lawrence, NPR News.

While many cities calculate eligibility for benefits based on federal poverty guidelines, San Francisco determines eligibility on area median income. The city is using funds from a voter approved tax measure to specifically fund childcare. For NPR News, I'm Daisy Nguyen in San Francisco.
