Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. Israel has begun to allow Palestinians to return to the heavily destroyed northern Gaza. It's the first time since the early days of the 15 day war that people have been allowed to return there. President Donald Trump, meanwhile, says he wants Jordan and Egypt to take in Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. His comments on board Air Force One this weekend raised concerns about the displacement of Palestinians. NPR's Aya Petrawi.

TRUMP called the Gaza Strip a real mess and a demolition site, adding that resettling people outside Gaza could be temporary or long term. In response to Trump's comments, senior Hamas figure Bassem Naim said Palestinians endured war with Israel in order to stay on their land and will not accept any proposals, even he said if seemingly well intentioned. Under the guise of reconstruction, he called for the blockade on Gaza to be lifted so residents can rebuild. Israeli airstrikes on Gaza and against Hamas destroyed most buildings and homes with entire families still buried under the rubble. Aya Botrawi, NPR News.

President Trump's hardline migration policies have angered many Latin American nations and as John Otis reports, they've even brought the US to the brink of a trade war with with its close ally Colombia.
John Otis
The Trump administration tried to send two military aircraft with one hundred and sixty deportees back to Colombia, but Colombian President Gustavo Petro revoked their landing rights, claiming the migrants were being mistreated. In response, Trump threatened to impose steep tariffs on all Colombian imports and other sanctions. Petro then announced reciprocal tariffs on U.S. imports and said in a message to Trump, quote, your blockade doesn't scare me. But apparently Petro had second thoughts.

Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo ended the impasse by saying his country would in fact continue to receive deportation flights. For NPR News, I'm John Otis. In Bogota, Colombia.

A Senate committee has issued their findings on the death of an eight year old girl who is in custody at a Customs and Border Protection station in Texas. Texas Public Public Radio's Jerry Clayton has more.
Jerry Clayton
The U.S. senate Judiciary Committee said the girl's death was indicative of systemic problems with the provision of medical care and CBP facilities and said the agency should take immediate steps to shorten the time that medically vulnerable individuals spend in custody. Eight year old Anadith Danae Reyes Alvarez died in 2023 at the Texas border after her mother repeatedly asked authorities for medical care. The girl's family was seeking asylum in the US after leaving Honduras. Although the girl medical history was documented by cbp, personnel claimed to be unaware Monadith had a history of congenital heart disease. The committee concluded that CBP must make changes to prevent similar deaths. I'm Jerry Clayton in San Antonio, and.

You'Re listening to NPR News. The World Health organization says around 70 people were killed this weekend in an attack on the only functional hospital in the Sudanese city of Al Fashar. The WHO has not said WHO is responsible for the attack, but local officials are blaming the Rapid Support Force rebel group for those deaths. Saudi Arabia's foreign minister says the attack is a violation of international law. This year's super bowl matchup is set with wins on Sunday. Both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles have advanced to the game on February 9th. NPR's Becky Sullivan reports from Philadelphia.

It was another playoffs classic between the Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills and their star quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen. The Bills had the ball with a chance to take the lead in the final minutes, but the Chiefs defense came up with a stop to seal the win. Here in Philly, the Eagles were flawless in a blowout of the Washington Commanders. On the Eagles very first play from scrimmage, star running back Saquon Barkley broke free for a 60 yard touchdown. Next month super bowl will be a rematch of the title game from two years ago, which the Chiefs won. Then Kansas City won last year, too. Now they're aiming for what could be a third super bowl victory in a row. They would be the first team in NFL history to achieve that. Becky Sullivan, NPR News, Philadelphia.

Hosted by Dale Willman and featuring contributions from reporters Aya Petrawi, John Otis, Jerry Clayton, and Becky Sullivan, the episode navigates through geopolitical tensions, immigration disputes, humanitarian crises, and significant sports achievements. Below is a detailed summary of the key topics discussed.
Israel Permits Palestinian Return to Northern Gaza
At [00:18], host Dale Willman reported that Israel has initiated a significant change by allowing Palestinians to return to the heavily destroyed northern Gaza for the first time since the onset of the 15-day war. This move marks a critical development in the ongoing conflict, potentially signaling shifts in the region's dynamics.
President Trump's Stance on Palestinian Resettlement
Continuing the discussion, Willman highlighted President Donald Trump's recent remarks from Air Force One, urging Jordan and Egypt to accept Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. Trump referred to Gaza as a "real mess and a demolition site" ([00:41]). These comments have sparked concern regarding the potential displacement of Palestinians.
Hamas' Response to Trump's Proposal
Aya Petrawi elaborates on the Hamas leadership's reaction to Trump's proposal. Senior Hamas figure Bassem Naim stated, "Palestinians endured war with Israel in order to stay on their land and will not accept any proposals, even if seemingly well-intentioned" ([00:41]). Naim emphasized the need to lift the blockade on Gaza to allow residents to rebuild, criticizing the ongoing airstrikes that have devastated the region.
Trump Administration's Migration Policies Strain Relations
At [01:16], Dale Willman introduced the escalating tensions between the United States and Colombia, resulting from President Trump's stringent migration policies. The administration's attempt to deport 160 individuals back to Colombia using military aircraft has provoked a severe diplomatic rift.
Colombian Leadership's Response
John Otis provided an in-depth analysis of the situation, detailing how Colombian President Gustavo Petro initially revoked landing rights for the deportation flights, accusing the U.S. of mistreatment towards the migrants. In retaliation, Trump threatened to impose "steep tariffs on all Colombian imports and other sanctions" ([01:28]).
Resolution and Continued Deportation Efforts
The impasse was temporarily resolved when Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo stated that Colombia would continue to accept deportation flights, countering Petro’s earlier resistance.
