Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. Israel has begun to allow Palestinians to return to the heavily destroyed northern Gaza. It's the first first time since the early days of the 15 month war that people have been allowed to return there. Lebanon's prime minister, meanwhile, says a ceasefire with Israel has been extended to February 18th. That news came after Israeli forces fired on civilians and Lebanese army soldiers, killing 22 people and injuring 124 others on the day it was supposed to withdraw entirely from Lebanon. NPR's Emily Fang reports.

The White House also says in a statement that it supports the extension of more than three weeks. The 60 day ceasefire agreement was brokered last November between Israel and Lebanon based militant group Hezbollah. It was supposed to see Israel pull out entirely from border villages in Lebanon. But this week Israel said Hezbollah had not pulled its fighters out completely, so it was staying put. And Israel fired on Lebanese citizens who said they were trying to return to their homes. Israel's military said it fired warning shots and also detained people who it said posed a, quote, imminent threat. The Lebanese army accused Israel of violating Lebanese sovereignty and called on its citizens to exercise self restraint. Emily Fang, NPR News.

Florida's legislature meets today in a special session called by Governor Ron DeSantis to take up measures aimed at curbing illegal immigration. NPR's Greg Allen reports.
Greg Allen
President Trump has expressed support for Florida's special session on a series of enforcement measures, including one that would require local officials to help carry out deportations or face suspension. Governor DeSantis wants to make it a state crime to enter the US Illegally and to require people to show proof of immigration status before sending money abroad. Republican leaders in Florida's legislative legislature have indicated they may take no action this week, but DeSantis says he'll keep the pressure on. You can view me as like a, as like a dog that's got you on the ankle on immigration. I am not just going to let go. Lawmakers say they will deal with immigration and other issues in their regular session in March. Greg Allen, NPR News, Miami.

In Altadena, which is located just below the San Gabriel Mountains, there's a heightened concern. People who live in vulnerable areas are placing sandbags in front of their homes.
Dale Willman
I want to make sure that we don't have any overflow on our curb into our property.
Steve Futterman
A few weeks ago, Dave Pierce would have welcomed rain. Not so right now.
Emily Fang
Hopefully it'll be a nice, slow, easy rain.
Steve Futterman
A flash flood warning is in effect through Monday. For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman in Los Angeles.

The episode details Lebanon’s Prime Minister announcing the extension of a ceasefire with Israel until February 18th. This extension comes in the wake of violent exchanges where Israeli forces struck civilians and Lebanese army soldiers, resulting in 22 fatalities and 124 injuries. The ceasefire, initially brokered in November last year between Israel and Hezbollah, was intended to ensure Israel’s complete withdrawal from Lebanese border villages. However, Israel cited Hezbollah's incomplete withdrawal as the reason for the extension. Emily Fang reports, “The Lebanese army accused Israel of violating Lebanese sovereignty and called on its citizens to exercise self-restraint,” emphasizing the fragile nature of the ceasefire.

Governor Ron DeSantis convened a special session of Florida's legislature to address illegal immigration, drawing support from former President Donald Trump. NPR’s Greg Allen reports on the proposed measures, which include making illegal entry into the U.S. a state crime and mandating proof of immigration status before monetary transfers abroad. Trump endorsed the session, stating, “You can view me as like a dog that's got you on the ankle on immigration. I am not just going to let go.” However, there is skepticism among Republican leaders regarding immediate legislative action, with plans to address immigration in the regular March session.

Residents are proactively placing sandbags to protect their properties. Futterman notes, “It's not going to be a massive amount of rain, but with the charred mountains now without any vegetation, there are worries.” A flash flood warning remains in effect through Monday, as authorities monitor the situation closely.
