Live from NPR News. In Washington, I'm Ryland Barton. Senate Democrats say a key deal has been reached for funding the government. But as NPR's Barbara Sprunt reports, a short term government shutdown is all but inevitable.
Barbara Sprunt
Originally, the Senate was going to vote on one big package with six funding bills for various agencies. Now Senate Democrats say there's a deal on the table to vote for five appropriations bills and a separate two week continuing resolution for the Department of Homeland Security. They've refused to support funding that agency without making major changes to immigration enforcement. The move allows other government services to continue while carving out more time to negotiate on changes to dhs. But the House must also vote on those five funding bills and they're on recess. If the House acts quickly upon returning, the effects of a shutdown could be limited as most federal offices are closed on the weekend. Barbara Sprint, NPR News, the Capitol.

President Trump has said he's trying to de escalate the immigration crackdown in Minnesota. He's replaced Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino with border czar Tom Homan. But Minnesota Public Radio's Clay Masters reports a drawdown hasn't happened in the Twin.

Cities yet, no real evidence on the streets of de escalation that includes ICE agents attempting to enter the Ecuadorian conference, allegedly without a warrant. The mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Fry, who has regularly been tangling with President Trump, responded to Homan's press conference today. Frey says any drawdown of ICE agents is a step in the right direction, but his ask remains the same. Operation Metro surge must end. And that's a reference to the ramped up presence ice has had in Minnesota.

Debbie Elliott, the National Weather Service says dangerously cold temperatures will persist over a wide area, including the Northern Plains, the Midwest and the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. North Carolina Governor Josh Stein is warning people to prepare for a second Arctic blast.
Josh Stein
It's going to be snow, not ice this time. That's a good thing, but it's still going to have real impacts on our lives. So if you can stay home Friday night and bundle up, we recommend you doing it.

Forecasters say frigid temperatures, heavy snow in some areas and strong gusty winds topping 25 mph will make conditions brutal. Debbie Elliot, NPR News.

Apple shares rose in after hours trading after the company reported strong earnings last quarter on the back of iPhone sales. CEO Tim Cook said it was the best quarter ever for the company's flagship phone. NPR's John Ruich reports.

Apple's revenues grew nearly 16% in the December quarter, hitting over $143 billion and exceeding market expectations. The company says it had strong sales in China and India and gained market share in the world's top two smartphone markets. On an investor call after earnings were announced, Analys peppered executives with questions about the company's artificial intelligence plans and supply chain constraints, particularly when it comes to memory. There's a global shortage of computer memory that's led other companies to increase consumer prices. CEO Tim Cook declined to speculate about the impact it might have on prices of Apple devices on AI. He was bullish about the partnership with Google, announced earlier this month to use its Gemini AI in Apple's Siri virtual assistant. John Ruich, NPR News.
