President Trump's border czar Tom Holman is in Minneapolis where he said Thursday that the administration could cut the number of immigration enforcement officers in Minnesota. Homan arrived in the state seeking to turned down the temperature following the killing of Renee Macklin Goode and Alex Preddy by federal agents. Here's NPR's Ryan Lucas.

It's normal after a shooting that involves a law enforcement officer for the FBI and the Justice Department to conduct a civil rights investigation. Deputy Attorney Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche has said publicly he sees no need to do so in goods killing. And the FBI is not conducting a civil rights investigation into Preddy's killing either. That's according to three sources who spoke with me on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of this issue.

The killings of Good and Preddy have led to calls for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign. A spending deal that would keep the government open is on the table. The deal addresses Democratic demands for curbs on aggressive immigration enforcement tactics. There could still be a brief partial shutdown because House members are on recess and not due back on Capitol Hill until Monday. President Trump is at the Kennedy center tonight for the premiere of the Melania documentary. NPR's Tamara Keith reports it massive promotional budget and an uncertain box office future.

Wuky, roadways in Kentucky were seriously impacted by ice snow accumulations from this past weekend's winter storm. Governor Andy Beshear said despite below freezing temperatures, the state did, quote, get a little luck allowing the Kentucky Transportation Department to make enough headway to assist city and county crews.

A former Illinois the sheriff's deputy has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the fatal shooting of Sonya Massie, a black woman who had dialed 911 asking for help. Sean Grayson was convicted of second degree murder in October and has been incarcerated since he was charged in Massie's killing. The U.S. s last hope for an Australian Open title is out of tennis, first Grand Slam of the year. Christina Kakuya has more from Melbourne.

Jessica Pegula fought to the very end but could not outplay Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, who took the semifinal match in straight sets 6 3, 76 in just over 90 minutes. Rybakina paid tribute to Pegula after the match, saying she was pleased with her game and the six seed American was a worthy opponent.
