I'm Dale Willman. U.S. tariffs against imports from China, Mexico and Canada go into effect on Tuesday. President Donald Trump declared an economic emergency this weekend as he ordered the tariffs. The response to his announcement was swift, and Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau challenged Trump's action violate the free trade Agreement.
Justin Trudeau
That the president and I, along with our Mexican partner, negotiated and signed a few years ago. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Trudeau also announced retaliatory tariffs on some U.S. imports into Canada. The World Health Organization says 50 Palestinians crossed out of Gaza for medical treatment on Saturday. Most of them were children. They left through the southern Rafah crossing into Egypt. It's the first time it's been opened in almost nine months. NPR's Kat Lansdorf reports.
Kat Lansdorf
Until last May, when the Israeli military took it over, Rafah was the main crossing for aid into Gaza in the war and also the only way Palestinians could leave, even if in limited numbers. Opening it for medical evacuation is part of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. Mohammed Abu Jalala was accompanying his 14 year old nephew today. Jalala says his nephew needs treatment after an Israeli airstrike left him with a head w burns all over his body. His injury happened in the last month of the war, thank God, or I don't think he would have made it, Jalala told NPR's producer in Gaza, Onas Baba. Medical evacuations like this are set to continue. Aid groups say thousands are in need. Kat Lansdorf, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

Democrats from around the country gathered just outside Washington, D.C. to pick a new leader after a bruising loss in the presidential election. Ken Martin faced off against Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wakeler, former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley and a few others. He replaces former chair Jamie Harrison. Martin says the party will take a tougher tack against Republicans.
Ken Martin
I've always viewed my role as a chair of the Democratic Party to take the low road so my candidates and elected officials can take the high road, meaning I'm going to throw a Punch. So Donald Trump, Republican Party this is a new DNC.
Dana Ferguson
Martin says he'll quickly start a review of the 2024 election and build out a war room to combat misinformation. For NPR News, I'm Dana Ferguson.

NATIONAL harbor, Maryland, President Donald Trump has fired the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, or cfpb. Rohit Chopra was appointed by President Joe Biden. His tenure at the bureau saw the removal of medical debt from credit reports and limits on overdraft payments set. But many people in the financial industry have been complaining that his actions amounted to regulatory overreach. You're listening to NPR News. Pakistani troops fought separatist insurgents in the northwestern region of Baluchistan on Saturday. At least 18 members of the country's security force were killed, along with 23 rebels. The fighting was some of the heaviest seen there in recent years. Journalists are taking Indiana to court over secrecy surrounding that state's purchase of a drug used in lethal injections. As George Hale from member station WFIU reports, the supply of pentobarbital made it possible for Indiana to restart executions last year.

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Indiana Capital Chronicle, a non profit newsroom based in Indianapolis. The news outlet accuses the state corrections department of failing to disclose how much it spent on the drugs. Indiana's legislature passed a law in 2017 protecting the identity of execution drug suppliers. But editor in chief Nikki Kelly says the Chronicle isn't asking for names.
