Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Amy Held. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told reporters he is now the acting director of usaid, but that he has delegated the authority to someone. Rubio says he is troubled by reports agency officials are not cooperating with people who are asking questions about how their spending taxpayer dollars. Rubio spoke from Latin America, where stopping illegal migration tops the agenda. The Trump administration has paused all foreign aid, but Rubio says he's giving waivers to some programs in countries he's visiting this week. NPR's Michelle Kellerman reports.

Before flying to El Salvador, Rubio visited an air base where 43 Colombian migrants, including women and a girl, were being deported from Panama. Rubio said Panama has been working with the US to stop migrants well before they can make their way to the.

Acting and interim leaders at the Justice Department have already dismissed prosecutors who investigated Donald Trump, senior FBI officials and lawyers who worked on Capitol riot cases. The Trump administration is compiling a list of potentially thousands of FBI agents who worked on January 6th. Prosecutions lawyers warn a wholesale purge will leave the country vulnerable at a time of serious threats to national security. This is NPR News. Recovery crews are in the Potomac river near Washington, D.C. today to retrieve the wreckage from last week's air disaster, the deadliest in the US in decades. All 67 people were killed in the collision between an airliner and an army helicopter. Officials say they are confident they will recover and identify the remaining dozen or so victims after the New Year's Day terrorist attack in New Orleans. Extra security measures are in place for Sunday's Super Bowl. Brooke Thorington of member station WRFK reports.

The Department of Homeland Security had upgraded its security assessment of the super bowl following the truck attack on Bourbon street that killed 14 people and left dozens injured. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry says beginning February 5th, security checkpoints will be set up for the French Quarter and the area surrounding the Superdome. Coolers and ice chest will be prohibited, and any bag or Container larger than 4 and a half inches by 6 and a half inches will be searched.
If an officer at the enhanced security checkpoint in the Quarter asks to search your bag, you are free to refuse it, but you are not free to enter.
