Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Shea Stevens. President Donald Trump says the US Will take temporary control of the Gaza Strip and threatens to deploy US Troops there if necessary to do so.
Donald Trump
The US Will take over the Gaza Strip and we will do a job with it, too. We'll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site. Level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings. Level it out.

Speaking at a White House press conference alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said that Palestinians in Gaza should be relocated to other countries. He did not say where or what authority should control the territory after a U.S. takeover. The U.S. agency for International Development, or USAID, is placing all of its employees on administrative leave, and overseas personnel are under orders to return to the US within 30 days. The move comes as billionaire Elon Musk takes steps to dismantle usaid, which has been responsible for administering humanitarian and development aid overseas. In New York, Nassau county says it will cross designate 10 of its police detectives as immigration enforcement officers. It is the first significant expansion of local police cooperation with ICE since President Trump began his second term. NPR's Martin Costi has details.

Many jurisdictions already work with ICE to identify potential deportees inside jails, but New York State's bail reform law has made it harder to hold people long enough for ICE to come and get them. And that's why Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder wants to streamline the process.
Donald Trump
If we make an arrest, and I'm going to let somebody out on an appearance ticket because of no bail at my station house, I will be notifying ICE that this person is here undocumented and that they will be able to come and pick that individual up.

10 Nassau Police detectives will have the authority to make immigration arrests, though the county executive says they won't be, quote, out looking for illegal migrants in the absence of other criminal charges. Martin Kosti, NPR News.

Federal investigators are still trying to piece together the events that led to the collision of an American Airlines passenger jet and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter. The the National Transportation Safety Board says data from an air traffic control display shows the helicopter was at 300ft at the time of the collision, well above the 200 foot ceiling it was required to maintain. Investigators say they need more information from the wreckage of the helicopter, which they hope will be removed from the Potomac river later this week. Joel Rose, NPR News, Washington.

You're listening to NPR News. The U.S. postal Service says it will temporarily stop accepting packages shipped from China. USPS says letters and large envelopes from China and Hong Kong will not be affected by the move, which comes as the US imposes 10% tariffs on certain Chinese imports. China's Ministry of Commerce says it will retaliate with its own tariffs on U.S. imports starting Monday. Beijing plans to slap a 10% tariff on crude oil, farm machinery and large displacement fuel cars from the US and a 15% tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas products. The Waffle health chain says it's imposing a temporary 50 cent surcharge on each egg order. That's in response to the biggest bird flu outbreak in a decade. The outbreak has forced farmers to slaughter millions of chickens, causing a shortage of eggs at grocery stores. This week's Billboard charts are out, and a brand new song debuts at number one. NPR's Stephen Thompson reports.

His duet with blackpink. This week, though, Mars gave up the top spot to a new song debuting at number one. It's called 4x4 by the rapper Travis Scott. 4x4 is Travis Scott's fifth song to hit number one, but the other four all stayed at the top spot for just a single week. So Bruno Mars may be back at number one before we know it. Stephen Thompson, NPR News.

NPR News Now: Episode Summary – February 4, 2025
Host: Shea Stevens | Release Date: February 5, 2025
In a significant and controversial announcement, President Donald Trump declared that the United States will assume temporary control of the Gaza Strip. Speaking at a White House press conference alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump outlined his administration's plan for the region.
Donald Trump [00:29]: "The US will take over the Gaza Strip and we will do a job with it, too. We'll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site. Level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings. Level it out."
Trump emphasized the mission to eliminate threats within Gaza, including unexploded ordnance and structural hazards. Despite these declarations, he did not specify the future governance structure or the destination for the relocated Palestinian population. The policy shift has prompted the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to place all its employees on administrative leave, with overseas personnel instructed to return to the United States within 30 days. This move coincides with billionaire Elon Musk's initiatives to dismantle USAID, an agency traditionally responsible for administering humanitarian and developmental aid abroad.
In local law enforcement developments, Nassau County in New York has announced the cross-designation of ten police detectives as immigration enforcement officers (IEOs). This marks the first significant expansion of cooperation between local police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since the beginning of President Trump's second term.
NPR’s Martin Costi reported:
Patrick Ryder [01:43]: "Many jurisdictions already work with ICE to identify potential deportees inside jails, but New York State's bail reform law has made it harder to hold people long enough for ICE to come and get them. And that's why Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder wants to streamline the process."
Commissioner Patrick Ryder further explained the operational scope:
Patrick Ryder [02:25]: "10 Nassau Police detectives will have the authority to make immigration arrests, though the county executive says they won't be, quote, out looking for illegal migrants in the absence of other criminal charges."
Additionally, President Trump addressed immigration enforcement measures:
Donald Trump [01:59]: "If we make an arrest, and I'm going to let somebody out on an appearance ticket because of no bail at my station house, I will be notifying ICE that this person is here undocumented and that they will be able to come and pick that individual up."
These measures aim to streamline the identification and removal of undocumented individuals within the criminal justice system, adapting to recent bail reforms that complicate immigration enforcement.
Tragically, search and rescue teams have recovered the remains of all 67 victims involved in the mid-air collision near Reagan National International Airport, marking it as the deadliest aviation disaster in the United States in 20 years. NPR’s Joel Rose provided an update on the ongoing investigation:
Joel Rose [02:41]: "Federal investigators are still trying to piece together the events that led to the collision of an American Airlines passenger jet and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter. The National Transportation Safety Board says data from an air traffic control display shows the helicopter was at 300 feet at the time of the collision, well above the 200-foot ceiling it was required to maintain. Investigators say they need more information from the wreckage of the helicopter, which they hope will be removed from the Potomac River later this week."
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is analyzing data to determine the causes of the collision, with a focus on the helicopter's altitude and compliance with air traffic regulations. Efforts to recover and examine the helicopter wreckage are underway, which are crucial for understanding the sequence of events that led to the catastrophic incident.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced a temporary halt on accepting packages shipped from China, a direct response to the U.S. government's imposition of a 10% tariff on certain Chinese imports. This action excludes letters and large envelopes, focusing solely on parcels.
In retaliation, China's Ministry of Commerce declared plans to impose its own tariffs on U.S. imports starting Monday. The retaliatory measures include a 10% tariff on U.S. crude oil, farm machinery, and large displacement fuel cars, and a 15% tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG) products. This tit-for-tat escalation reflects ongoing tensions in U.S.-China trade relations, impacting various sectors and potentially influencing global markets.
The Waffle Health chain has implemented a temporary surcharge of 50 cents per egg order, citing the most significant bird flu outbreak in a decade. This outbreak has compelled farmers to cull millions of chickens, resulting in a considerable shortage of eggs across grocery stores. Consumers are experiencing increased prices and reduced availability of eggs, highlighting the vulnerability of the agricultural supply chain to disease outbreaks.
In entertainment news, the latest Billboard Hot 100 charts reveal a shift at the top spot. After weeks dominated by Bruno Mars' duets with Lady Gaga and BLACKPINK, rapper Travis Scott's new song "4x4" has debuted at number one. This achievement marks Scott's fifth number-one hit, although his previous four songs each remained at the summit for only a single week.
Stephen Thompson [04:21]: "In recent weeks, the Hot 100 has been dominated by two songs that feature Bruno Mars. There's his duet with Lady G."
Stephen Thompson [04:22]: "His duet with BLACKPINK. This week, though, Mars gave up the top spot to a new song debuting at number one. It's called '4x4' by the rapper Travis Scott."
Despite this temporary displacement, analysts suggest that Bruno Mars may reclaim the number one position in the near future, indicating a highly competitive music chart landscape.
