Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Shay Stevens. President Trump welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House on Tuesday and suggested a U.S. takeover of the Gaza Strip. More from NPR's Lexi Schapitl.

In a joint press conference with Netanyahu, Trump repeated his assertion that the Palestinians displaced in Gaza should be relocated to other countries. He also proposed that the United States should, quote, take over and own Gaza for an indefinite long term period of time.
Donald Trump
This was not a decision made lightly. Everybody I've spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land, developing and creating thousands of jobs with something that will be magnificent.
Lexi Schapitl
Trump did not respond to questions about what authority the US has to take over the Palestinian territory. The president also didn't rule out sending US Troops to Gaza to support the redevelopment. Lexi Schapitl, NPR news, Washington.

The U.S. agency for International Development, or USAID, is placing all of its employees on administrative leave. The agency's overseas personnel are under orders to return to the US within 30 days. The move comes as the Trump administration takes steps to dismantle usaid, which has been responsible for administering humanitarian aid and development overseas. The U.S. postal Service says it's temporarily stopping accepting package shipments from China and Hong Kong. As NPR's Giles Snyder reports, the move comes as U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods take hold.
Giles Snyder
It's not clear if the suspension is tied to the Trump administration's additional 10% tariff on Chinese products. But as part of his tariff implementation, President Trump ended what are known as de minimis shipments, packages worth less than $800. The de minimis exemption allows overseas online retailers to send small packages directly to American consumers without paying a tax.

NPR's Giles Snyder reporting. The commissioner of the National Football League says the organization remains committed to its diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. His statement comes as companies nationwide roll back DEI programs. NPR's Becky Sullivan has more.
Roger Goodell
Speaking to reporters in New Orleans on Monday ahead of the upcoming Super Bowl, Commissioner Roger Goodell said not only is the NFL sticking with dei, but also that diversity makes the league better.
We're not in this because it's a trend to get in it or a trend to get out of it. Our efforts are fundamental in trying to attract the best possible talent.
In his first term, President Trump clashed with the league over its handling of players who took a knee during the national anthem as a way to protest racism and police brutality. Back then, Trump urged fans to boycott the NFL. Now the president is planning to attend the biggest game of the year, the Sunday's Super Bowl. He'll be the first sitting president to do so. Hosted by NPR's Shay Stevens, this episode of NPR News Now provides a comprehensive overview of the latest national and international news updates. Below is a detailed summary of the key topics discussed, enriched with notable quotes and timestamps for context.
President Trump's Proposal on Gaza
President Donald Trump made headlines by welcoming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House on Tuesday. During their joint press conference, Trump proposed a controversial plan regarding the Gaza Strip:
U.S. Takeover of Gaza: Trump suggested that the United States should "take over and own Gaza for an indefinite long term period of time" (00:46).
Donald Trump [00:46]: "This was not a decision made lightly. Everybody I've spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land, developing and creating thousands of jobs with something that will be magnificent."
Relocation of Palestinians: He reiterated his stance that Palestinians displaced from Gaza should be relocated to other countries. However, Trump did not clarify the legal authority the U.S. possesses to execute such a takeover or rule out the possibility of deploying U.S. troops to support redevelopment efforts (00:59).
USAID Under Scrutiny
In a move aligning with the Trump administration's broader strategy to reduce federal agencies, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is facing significant changes:
Administrative Leave for Employees: All USAID employees have been placed on administrative leave, with overseas personnel instructed to return to the U.S. within 30 days (01:11).
Dismantling USAID: This step is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle USAID, which has historically been responsible for administering humanitarian aid and development projects abroad.
U.S. Postal Service Tariffs on Chinese Shipments
The U.S. Postal Service has temporarily suspended accepting package shipments from China and Hong Kong. This decision coincides with broader economic measures taken by the Trump administration:
Impact of Tariffs: The suspension emerges amid the implementation of additional 10% tariffs on Chinese products. Specifically, President Trump has ended the "de minimis" exemption, which previously allowed overseas online retailers to send small packages (under $800) directly to American consumers without incurring taxes (01:49).
Giles Snyder [01:49]: "It's not clear if the suspension is tied to the Trump administration's additional 10% tariff on Chinese products. But as part of his tariff implementation, President Trump ended what are known as de minimis shipments..."
Wall Street Futures and Bird Flu Impact
Market Movements: U.S. futures experienced a decline in after-hours trading on Wall Street following slight gains on Tuesday (03:06).
Agricultural Sector Strain: The Waffle House chain announced a temporary 50-cent surcharge on each egg order in response to the most significant bird flu outbreak in a decade. This outbreak has led to the culling of billions of chickens, resulting in egg shortages at grocery stores and restaurants (03:06).
NFL's Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
Amidst a national trend of companies rolling back DEI programs, the National Football League (NFL) reaffirmed its dedication to these initiatives:
Commitment to DEI: Goodell emphasized that the NFL's efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion are not transient trends but fundamental to attracting top talent.
Roger Goodell 02:37: "We're not in this because it's a trend to get in it or a trend to get out of it. Our efforts are fundamental in trying to attract the best possible talent."
Past Clashes with President Trump: Goodell referenced previous tensions with President Trump, who had criticized the NFL over player protests during the national anthem. Despite past conflicts, Trump is now set to attend the Super Bowl, marking him as the first sitting president to do so (02:45).
Roger Goodell 02:45: "We're not in this because it's a trend to get in it or a trend to get out of it..."
Rebuilding the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore
Following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge last spring due to a massive container ship collision that resulted in six fatalities, Maryland officials have unveiled a redesigned replacement:
New Bridge Features:
Enhanced Capacity: The new Cable Stage Bridge will be wider and taller, accommodating larger vessels.
