This was not the most beautiful, exciting, memorable super bowl ever played, but don't tell that to the Seattle Seahawks. Right now, they are celebrating on the field as the Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 29 to 13 to win the Super Bowl. This was a game where the Seattle defense controlled the game, controlled the New England offense. The Patriots were not able to score a single point until the fourth quarter. By that time, they trailed 19 to nothing and were never able to seriously challenge Seattle. For Seattle, it's the second super bowl victory in the franchise history. The Seahawks for a second time on top of the professional football world.

That's Steve Futterman with our report. As Congress prepares to debate continued funding for the Department of Homeland Security, Democrats are going on the offensive this weekend. Funding for DHS was extended for two weeks to allow debate on the measure. Without a deal, DHS and several other areas of government could be shut down later this month. A Hong Kong court has sentenced the activist and media mogul Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison. He'd been found guilty last year under Beijing's national security law in what NPR's Emily Fang says has been one of the most closely watched trials in Hong Kong.

The 78 year old Lai once ran one of Hong Kong's most popular tabloids and was unabashedly outspoken against Beijing and its increasing control over the region, often attending anti Beijing protests as well. He was arrested along with several of his senior colleagues in 2020, and he has been in prison since. His daughter, Clair Lai, told NPR shortly before his verdict that her father's health has worsened dramatically, like in less than.
