The sheriff's office said most people remained peaceful, but several dozen arrests were made after some protesters began throwing chew chunks of ice at police. Russia is continuing to attack Ukraine's energy grid during one of the most brutal winters in recent years. As NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports, people in Kyiv have electricity for just an hour and a half to two hours a day, with temperatures there well below freezing.

Ukraine's largest energy provider, Detec, said hundreds of Russian drones and missiles targeted the electricity network Saturday, damaging two thermal power plants and key high voltage substations. D Damage to those substations forced operators to reduce output at nuclear power plants, leading to a significant loss of available electricity in Ukraine. Ukraine gets about 70% of its electricity from nuclear power. In his nightly address Saturday, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia continues to attack in massive strikes that are contrary to ongoing diplomatic work to end the war. This is a level of attack that no terrorist in the world has ever allowed itself, said Zelensky. Russia, he said, must feel the response of the entire world. The United States and Iran held indirect talks in the country of Oman on Friday, where they discussed Iran's nuclear program, and officials say they plan to meet again soon. NPR's Jane Areraf has more on that story.

Iran insists that negotiations remain focused on its nuclear program, which it says is for peaceful purposes. International regulators say they have not seen evidence Iran is building a bomb, but the US Continues to accuse Iran of trying to build one. The Trump administration has made clear that what it really wants is regime change. In addition to a military buildup backing threats against Iran, it's using financial sanctions and currency manipulation. U.S. treasury Secretary Scott Besant said this week that the U.S. engineered a free fall of the Iranian currency that sparked protests in Iran in December. At least 5,000 people were believed killed, most of them protesters. Jay N Araf, NPR News.
