Donald Trump
I don't know if it's kickbacks or what's going on, but the people look, I ran on this and the people want me to find it. And I've had a great help with Elon Musk, who's been terrific. Bottom line, you say you trust him, trust Elon. Oh, he's not gaining anything.
Franco Ordonez

This now opens up a new area where Gazans are allowed to return and move freely without the presence of Israeli forces. No traces of the area remain. What was once a paved highway is now a dirt path, and one can see sewage pipes beneath the ground.

Mahomes and the Chiefs have become the NFL's newest dynasty. They've been to five of the last six Super Bowls, including today, and won three of them. Today would be their fourth in all and their third consecutive. This year's Chiefs have thrived in close games. They've won all 12 where the margin of victory was within one score. The Eagles, though, are no pushover. Their acquisition of the star running back Saquon Barkley has turbocharged their offense, and when their quarterback, Jalen Hurts, is healthy. They haven't lost a game since Sept. President Trump is expected to be in attendance today at the Superdome in New Orleans, and Kendrick Lamar will perform in the halftime show. Becky Sullivan, NPR News.

NPR News Now: February 9, 2025, 5 PM EST – Detailed Summary
1. Politics: President Trump Endorses Elon Musk's Federal Workforce Reductions
In a noteworthy development, President Donald Trump publicly backed Elon Musk's initiatives to reduce the federal workforce. During a pregame Super Bowl interview with Fox News' Bret Baier at [00:36], Trump lauded Musk's efforts, stating, "I've had a great help with Elon Musk, who's been terrific. Bottom line, you say you trust him, trust Elon." This endorsement comes amid increasing scrutiny of Musk’s strategies to dismantle federal agencies, including USAID. Franco Ordonez of NPR reported that Musk has targeted significant federal bodies such as the Department of Education and the Pentagon, with Trump promising to "find billions of dollars in fraud and abuse" within these departments. Musk’s aggressive restructuring has sparked debate over the implications for federal operations and oversight.
2. Government Operations: Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Halts Activities
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is experiencing significant disruptions, as staff members have been instructed to work remotely following the closure of its D.C. headquarters. Jeanine Herbst reported at [01:12] that acting director Russell Vogt has ordered a suspension of nearly all bureau activities. This sudden halt raises concerns about the future of consumer financial protections and regulatory oversight, especially amidst ongoing economic challenges.
3. International Affairs: Israeli Military Withdrawal from Gaza
A pivotal moment in the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement has unfolded as the Israeli military completes its withdrawal from the Nitzarim corridor in Gaza. Daniel Estrin and Anas Baba detailed at [01:34] that Israeli troops have exited a critical strip of land, once heavily fortified as a military base. The area, now devoid of Israeli presence, is being restored to Gaza civilians, with visible remnants like dirt paths replacing paved highways and exposed sewage infrastructure. The withdrawal has not been without incident; leaving behind ammunition canisters and graffiti, including a provocative message reading "Trump Tower, Gaza." Additionally, a body was discovered under a sand dune, highlighting the ongoing tensions and the incomplete nature of the ceasefire. Hamas has interpreted this move as evidence that Israel has not achieved complete victory, signaling potential future conflicts.
4. Weather: Severe Winter Storm Impacts the Northeast
A significant winter storm has enveloped parts of the northeastern United States, with impacts expected to continue as another system forms. NPR’s Amy Held, citing meteorologist Bob Orvec at [02:26], reported, "More disruptive winter weather is on its way with an overall very active pattern across the country." The storm is projected to bring up to half a foot of snow from Kansas to the Mid-Atlantic regions, including Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington. Additionally, there is a risk of icing in areas extending into Virginia and North Carolina, which could lead to tree damage and widespread power outages. The hazardous road conditions are expected to cause significant travel delays, and flight disruptions are anticipated from Tuesday into Wednesday.
5. Sports: Super Bowl Showdown Between Eagles and Chiefs
The anticipation for the Super Bowl is mounting as the Philadelphia Eagles prepare to face the Kansas City Chiefs. Scheduled to kick off at 6:30 PM Eastern Time from the Superdome in New Orleans, the game features dynamic contenders. Becky Sullivan highlighted at [03:29] that the Chiefs, led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, aim to make history as the first team to secure three consecutive Super Bowl wins. Mahomes' leadership has been instrumental in the Chiefs' dominance, with the team excelling in close matches—winning all 12 games decided by less than a touchdown.
Conversely, the Eagles present a formidable challenge with the addition of star running back Saquon Barkley, which has significantly enhanced their offensive capabilities. Quarterback Jalen Hurts, when healthy, has been a game-changer for the Eagles, contributing to an unbeaten streak since September. The game will also draw high-profile attendance, including President Trump, and feature a halftime performance by Kendrick Lamar, adding to the event's high stakes and broad appeal.
6. Entertainment: Box Office Highlights Dominated by "Dogman"
In the realm of cinema, DreamWorks Animation's "Dogman" has achieved remarkable box office success, securing the top spot with an estimated $13 million in ticket sales at the weekend box office. Despite a production budget of approximately $40 million, "Dogman," adapted from a graphic novel, has grossed $54 million domestically within two weeks of its release. Trailing behind is the Valentine’s Day-themed slasher film "Heart Eyes," produced by Spyglass Media Group and distributed by Sony, which earned $8 million against an $18 million budget. These figures reflect strong audience engagement and the effective adaptation of source material in contemporary film markets.
