Teachers in San Francisco are on strike. They want higher pay, better health care benefits and more special education resources. Spencer Whitney from member station KQED reports.

After a weekend of last ditch negotiations, the teachers union and the district came to some agreements, but not enough to prevent the walkout. Cassandra Curo is the president of the United Educators of San Francisco. She says they want protections for immigrant students, but that the district's proposals didn't go far enough.

Laura Dudnick, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Unified School District, says that balancing the budget is their top priority.
