Came about in response to federal immigration officers shooting and killing Alex Preddy in Minneapolis. It's taking place as congressional Democrats are negotiating with the White House on proposals to change policies and tactics used by agencies like ice. Democrats say they won't vote for a DHS funding bill that doesn't include major changes to the department. The current stopgap funding bill for DHS runs out on Friday. If an agreement can't be reached this week, Congress will likely have to pass another resolution for the department. Barbara Sprent, NPR News, Washington.

A small bipartisan group of lawmakers has reviewed a set of new files from the Epstein investigation. These were provided by the Justice Department. They were supposed to show all of the information and names with no redactions, but the lawmakers say that didn't happen. Republican Congressman Thomas Massie and Democrat Ro Khanna say there were redactions that should not have been there. They also say the new files redacted the names of six men who were likely incriminated by being included in the Epstein files. Both Massey and Khanna are demanding that the Justice Department reveal the men's names. Meanwhile, convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell refused to answer yesterday when she was questioned by House lawmakers in a deposition. They were investigating her links to Jeffrey Epstein. Maxwell spoke via video link from her prison in Texas.

Her lawyer says she will only cooperate if President Trump gives her clemency. The family of the late Virginia Giuffre, a survivor of Epstein's abuse, released an open letter to Maxwell. It says Maxwell was a central and deliberate figure in Epstein's system built to abuse children. President Trump is threatening to block a new bridge that links Detroit, Michigan, to Windsor, Ontario. It hasn't opened yet. Writing online last night, Trump said he wants Canada to turn over half of the ownership of the bridge to the U.S. canada paid for the whole bridge and part of it belongs to the state of Michigan. The government is going to release its latest report on retail sales for December. This morning the report was delayed because of the partial government shutdown in January. Personal spending fuels the U.S. economy. You're listening to NPR News from Washington. Authorities in Arizona continue to search for the mother of TODAY show host Savannah Guthrie. Officials say 84 year old Nancy Guthrie was abducted from her home in Tucson more than a week ago. Savannah Guthrie has released another online video message. She is pleading for help in locating her mother. She asks that anyone who might have any information to please contact police. Officials in Cuba are telling airline companies that they're running out of jet fuel. Some airlines, such as Air Canada, have suspended flights to the island. The Trump administration is blocking fuel sources going to Cuba. They're typically from Venezuela and Mexico. The super bowl featured several ads for artificial intelligence companies. But as NPR's John Ruich reports, some of these did not sit well with viewers.
