On Capitol Hill, top immigration officials appeared before lawmakers Tuesday for the first time since two US Citizens were shot and killed by federal officers in Minneapolis. Here's Jimena Bastillo reports.

Democrats and some Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee criticized the tactics used by officers on the ground and the strategy of top Trump administration officials to curb illegal immigration. The criticisms came as congressional funding is set to expire on Friday for the Homeland Security Department. That's the Cabinet department that houses Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection and Citizenship and Immigration Services. The hearing underscored how deeply divided Republicans and Democrats remain on top level changes to immigration and enforcement in the wake of the shootings. It suggested Congress is inching closer to another stopgap bill to fund the department in absence of a deeper agreement. Jimena Bustillo, NPR News, Washington.

The bipartisan National Governors association has canceled a meeting with President Trump that had been set for later this month during the group's annual conference. A court document unsealed Tuesday shows the FBI relied on debunked claims of fraud to obtain a search warrant to seize ballots from an election office in Fulton County, Georgia, and that the investigation was initiated by a lawyer who tried to help President Trump overturn his election loss in 2020. At the winter Olympics in Milan, the American heavily favored to win gold in men's figure skating as a sizable lead after the first day of competition. Here's Steve Futterman reporting.

Ilia Malinin dominated the competition in the short program. The 21 year old, in his first Olympics, put together a flawless skate, including two quadruple jumps. He ended up with a score of 108.16. That's more than five points ahead of his closest competitor, Yuma Kageyama of Japan. That's a huge margin when it comes to figure skating. He's in great position to win the gold on Friday when the free skate will take place. Melanin, who has the nickname the Quad God because of his unparalleled ability to perform quadruple jumps, is expected to attempt six or seven in Friday's long program. That includes what could be the first quadruple axel ever on Olympic ice. For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman in Milan.
