Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dave Mattingley. Authorities in Arizona say they detained a person south of Tucson and questioned them about the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the police mother of NBC TODAY show host Savannah Guthrie. The elder Guthrie has been missing for more than a week and is believed to have been abducted from her home. NPR's Emma Bowman has more.
C
A spokesperson for the sheriff's department said the, quote, subject was detained during a traffic stop south of Tucson. The news comes hours after investigators had their first big break in the case. The FBI released images retrieved from Guthrie's security camera showing a masked person at her front door the morning she went missing. Authorities have yet to name any suspects. It's also not clear whether Nancy Guthrie is still alive. Emma Bowman, NPR News.

And authorities now say they've released that person from custody. Authorities in Canada say at least nine people have been shot and killed in British Columbia, seven of them at a school where the body of the suspected shooter was also found. More than two dozen people were also wounded at the school in Tumbler Ridge. That town is hundreds of miles north of Vancouver, near the border with Alberta. Premier David Eby spoke at a news conference.
D
It makes us think about our kids safety when they're going to school. We take it for granted. You go to school, you come home safe, and events like this give us pause.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say they believe the attack at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School was carried out by a woman who they say ended the attack by taking her own life. The school has less than 200 students. A motive for the shooting is under investigation. This is day three of a teacher strike in San Francisco's Unified School District. Classes are cancelled again today for nearly 50,000 students. As Aya Ali Ahmad with member station KQED reports, teachers are demanding higher pay and expanded health benefits.
E
Thousands of educators march through the heart of the city demanding the district fully cover family health care in one of the nation's most expensive regions. The district has offered to cover 80% of those premiums, but union leader Natalie Horizzi says that's not enough.
F
We walk the line until it's 100%, and we walk the line until para educators and certificated get the raise. We deserve to stay in our city.
E
The district says it currently faces a more than $100 million deficit. For NPR News, I'm Aya Ali Ahmad in San Francisco.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due at the White House today. He'll be there for talks with President Trump about efforts to negotiate an end to Iran's nuclear program. This is NPR News from Washington. As the Winter Olympics Continue In Italy, NPR's Ruth Sherlock reports. Climate change is making it more difficult for the International Olympic Committee to find suitable locations for the Winter Games.
G
The International Olympic Committee, the ioc, is reckoning with a stark truth. The pool of countries that can host the Winter Olympics is shrinking dramatically. The IOC cites a recent study warning that because of climate change, by the mid century, only about 10 countries may be able to host snow events. So the IOC is considering moving the event between a small permanent pool of climate reliable hosts or spreading the events across a wide geographic area or even countries to find the best high altitude snowspots. And they may move the Games earlier, beginning in January to avoid the snow melt that often happens by this point in the season. Ruth Sherlock, NPR News.

The latest US Employment numbers are due out this morning from the Labor Department. The the release of the January data was delayed by the latest partial shutdown of the federal government. Economists expect the nation's jobless rate to hold steady for the month at 4.4%. Yesterday the government reported retail sales held steady in December, suggesting Americans remain concerned about a sluggish job market and the effects of President Trump's tariffs on the costs of goods. Wall street is coming off another record high close for the Dow Jones Industrials. The Dow added 52 points yesterday to finish 50,188. I'm Dave Mattingly, NPR News, in Washington.
