Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. Things got heated on Capitol Hill Wednesday. Attorney General Pam Bondi clashed with Democrats during a combative House judiciary hearing. She faced questions over the Justice Department's handling of Epstein files and allegations that the Justice Department is being used to go after President Trump's perceived enemies. Maryland's Jamie Raskin is the panel's top Democrat.
Jamie Raskin
You've turned the People's Department of Justice into Trump's instrument of revenge. Trump orders up prosecutions like pizza and you deliver every time.

Fondi stood by the DOJ and defended President Trump.
Pam Bondi
I find it interesting that she keeps going after President Trump, the greatest president in American history, and if they could maintain their composure. This isn't a circus. This is a hearing.

The hearing came after a grand jury declined to issue any indictments in the case of six Democratic members of Congress who appeared in that video reminding members of the military that they should not follow legal order, illegal orders. Rare scenes of celebration have been unfolding at the Gaza border crossing with Egypt after a year of full closure. NPR's Anas Baba reports that reunions are happening under tight Israeli restrictions in southern Gaza.

Celebratory music rises in the air. Hassan Zanoun is 28. He has waited three years to see his bride again. Nearby, a father wraps his arms around his wife and the five kids he hasn't held in two years. But these reunions are few and far between. Israel said 150 medical patients would be allowed to leave Gaza each day and 50 people permitted to enter. Medical officials in Gaza say only about a quarter of those patients scheduled to deport actually made it out. Al Rafah policy is calculated in figures for families here it's counted in years apart. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is denying rumors that he will announce presidential elections on the four year anniversary of the war this month. NPR's Eleanor Beardsley says those rumors triggered speculation that the Trump administration is pressuring Ukraine to hold elections.
Eleanor Beardsley
I have already said that we can move to elections only when there is the necessary security in place, zelensky told reporters. He said the US had raised the issue of elections, but not in connection with security guarantees as part of a peace deal with Russia. Olga Aivazovska heads a Kyiv based election monitoring organization we have more than 4.6.

Millions of displaced people inside Ukraine and.

Millions abroad, plus soldiers on the front line. She says preparing an election will take at least six months once the war has ended because Russia could attack polling stations. The Kremlin regularly pushes the narrative that Ukraine must hold elections because Zelensky is illegitimate. Eleanor Beardsley, NPR News.

Keev this is NPR News. Flights out of the airport in El Paso, Texas, resumed after Tuesday night's ground stop. The FAA closed the airport for more than seven hours, stranding travelers and disrupting medical evacuation flights. A source tells NPR that the shutdown came after the FAA learned that the military used a laser weapon to take down a suspected drone that now appears to have been a party balloon. The suspect in Tuesday's school shooting in Canada and has been identified as an 18 year old who had a history of police visits to her home to check in on her mental health. Police say Jesse Van Routilar first killed her mother and stepmother at the family home before attacking the nearby school. Eight people were killed. Authorities say Routselaar was found dead from an apparent self inflicted wound. A South African game park has just welcomed a rare new addition, the first white lion cub born there in 10 years. Kate Bartlett reports from Johannesburg.

Video from Timbavati Nature Reserve shows the male white lion cub frolicking with his mom in the bush. The reserve in the Kruger region of South Africa is one of the only places in the world where there are still white lions in the wild. White lions are a genetic rarity because both parents need to carry a recessive gene. Some white lions have blue eyes and pink noses and paw pads. They were hunted to near extinction. And now, according to the Global White Lion Trust, there are only about 13 in the wild and several hundred in captivity. Kate Bartlett, NPR News, Johannesburg.
