Christine Shields
Trump's priorities are seeing India's high tariffs.
Lakshmi Singh
Lowered on US Goods. That's a number one priority for him.
Aswell Khalid
Trump has pledged to impose reciprocal tariffs on countries that charge duties on U.S. imports. Other issues between the countries include immigration, technology and development defense. The US Relationship with India has seen strong bipartisan support in recent years, especially as a counter to China's influence in the region. Asma Khalid, NPR News.

Brooke Rollins will be the country's next secretary of agriculture. President Trump's candidate has been confirmed to oversee the department as the administration imposes higher tariffs that analysts say will affect U.S. businesses and consumers. Shares in the farm equipment maker Deere & Co. Are down more than 1.5% after it warned of slowing sales in North America. U.S. farmers get more than 20% of their income from exports, and they're often a high profile target in any trade war. Elon Musk, President Trump's appointment on the government cost cutting entity known as Doge is comparing federal agencies to weeds.

There's roughly 450 federal agencies of one kind or another. That's more agencies. That's almost an average of two agencies per year since the formation of the United States. So, I mean, how many agencies do you really need to run a country? 99, not? 450, that's for sure.

Speaking by video to the annual World Government Summit in the United Arab Emirates, Musk says the US Needs to entirely delete many agencies. An intense storm known as an atmospheric river is bearing down on California today. It's bringing valuable rain, but also increases the risk of mudslides and floods. Here's NPR's Alejandra.
Christine Shields
Atmospheric rivers are exactly what they sound giant ribbons of water vapor flowing through the sky like a river.
Aswell Khalid
If you look at them from a satellite, they actually look a little bit like a river where they're sort of long and narrow and they meander.
Christine Shields
That's atmospheric scientist Christine Shields from the national center for Atmospheric Research she says atmospheric rivers are a normal part of California weather and can deliver a lot of valuable water to the region, but they often include short and intense bursts of heavy rainfall that can lead to flooding and in the burned areas around Los Angeles, potential debris flows and mudslides. That's why experts say it's important to keep close track of emergency alerts. Alejandra Burunda, NPR News, from Washington.

This is NPR. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Has been confirmed by the Senate to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. The vote was 52 to 48. Senator Mitch McConnell, the former Republican majority leader and a polio survivor, joined Democratic senators to vote against Kennedy. Honda and Nissan are scrapping their more than $50 billion proposed merger. Had a deal gone through, the Japanese companies would have created one of the world's largest auto groups. Talks broke down over differences on the structure of the new company. Thousands of artists from around the world have signed an open letter asking auction house Christie's to cancel an upcoming sale of art made using art intelligence. NPR's Chloe Veltman reports. Christie's Augmented Intelligence Sale is being billed as the first of its kind at a major auction house.
Chloe Veltman
The letter asks Christie's not to go ahead with the auction, which features pieces by such prominent art world figures as Refik Anadol and Holly Herndon on the grounds that much of it was created using AI models known to be trained on unlicensed copyrighted work. These models and the companies behind them exploit human artists using their work without permission or payment to build commercial AI products that compete with them, the letter states in an email to npr. Christie's did not address the letter's main issue, but said AI is being used to enhance the featured artists bodies of work. Augmented Intelligence is scheduled to open for bidding online and at Christie's New York on February 20th. Chloe Veltman, NPR News.

NPR News Now: Episode Summary – February 13, 2025
Released on February 13, 2025, NPR News Now delivers the latest news in five minutes. This episode covers a range of topics, including international trade relations, significant governmental appointments, environmental updates, corporate mergers, the intersection of art and artificial intelligence, and financial markets.
President Trump Hosts Prime Minister Modi
President Donald Trump hosts Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, focusing on critical issues such as trade and immigration. The meeting underscores the ongoing dynamic between the two nations amidst global economic shifts.
Trade Tensions and Tariff Policies
Trump has expressed concerns over India's trade practices, labeling the country as a "big abuser of trade." Lisa Curtis, a former member of the Trump administration, highlighted that Trump's primary focus is on reducing India's high tariffs on U.S. goods. As Aswell Khalid reports, the president has pledged to impose reciprocal tariffs on nations that impose duties on U.S. imports, aiming to create a more balanced trade environment.

The U.S.-India relationship enjoys robust bipartisan support, particularly as both nations seek to counterbalance China's growing influence in the region.
Brooke Rollins Appointed as Secretary of Agriculture
Brooke Rollins has been confirmed by the Senate as the next Secretary of Agriculture, receiving a narrow vote of 52 to 48. This appointment comes at a time when the administration is implementing higher tariffs, which analysts believe will impact U.S. businesses and consumers significantly.
Market Reactions and Farmer Impact
Following the confirmation, shares of Deere & Co., a prominent farm equipment manufacturer, declined by over 1.5% due to warnings of slowing sales in North America. With U.S. farmers deriving more than 20% of their income from exports, the new tariffs pose potential challenges for the agricultural sector.

Calls for Government Downsizing
Elon Musk, in a video address at the annual World Government Summit in the United Arab Emirates, compared federal agencies to weeds. Musk advocated for the elimination of numerous governmental bodies, arguing for greater efficiency.
“There's roughly 450 federal agencies of one kind or another. That's more agencies. That's almost an average of two agencies per year since the formation of the United States. So, I mean, how many agencies do you really need to run a country? 99, not? 450, that's for sure.” – Elon Musk [02:06]
Musk's comments reflect a growing sentiment among some leaders advocating for streamlined government operations and reduced bureaucratic overhead.
Heavy Rainfall and Flood Risks
California is bracing for an intense atmospheric river, a phenomenon characterized by massive ribbons of water vapor moving through the atmosphere. While this system promises much-needed rainfall, it also heightens the risk of mudslides and floods, especially in areas around Los Angeles that have experienced significant wildfires.
“Atmospheric rivers are a normal part of California weather and can deliver a lot of valuable water to the region, but they often include short and intense bursts of heavy rainfall that can lead to flooding and in the burned areas around Los Angeles, potential debris flows and mudslides.” – Christine Shields [02:35]
Residents are advised to stay vigilant by monitoring emergency alerts to mitigate potential hazards associated with the storm.
Narrow Senate Vote and Opposition
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been confirmed to lead the Department of Health and Human Services following a closely contested Senate vote of 52 to 48. The confirmation faced opposition from Senator Mitch McConnell, a former Republican majority leader and polio survivor, who joined Democratic senators in voting against Kennedy.
“The vote was 52 to 48. Senator Mitch McConnell, the former Republican majority leader and a polio survivor, joined Democratic senators to vote against Kennedy.” – Lakshmi Singh [03:10]
Kennedy's appointment comes at a pivotal time as the administration navigates public health policies amidst evolving challenges.
Failed Negotiations and Market Impact
Japanese automotive giants Honda and Nissan have called off their proposed merger, which was anticipated to create one of the world's largest auto groups. The collapse of talks was primarily due to disagreements over the structural framework of the new entity.
“Had a deal gone through, the Japanese companies would have created one of the world's largest auto groups. Talks broke down over differences on the structure of the new company.” – Lakshmi Singh [03:10]
The termination of the merger could lead to increased competition in the automotive sector and has significant implications for global market dynamics.
Open Letter Criticizes Use of AI in Art Creation
Thousands of artists worldwide have signed an open letter urging auction house Christie's to cancel its upcoming "Augmented Intelligence Sale." The artists argue that the AI models used to create the featured artworks were trained on unlicensed copyrighted material, exploiting artists without consent or compensation.
“These models and the companies behind them exploit human artists using their work without permission or payment to build commercial AI products that compete with them.” – Chloe Veltman [04:03]
Christie's has stated that AI technology is employed to enhance the featured artists' bodies of work. The auction is scheduled to open for bidding online and at Christie's New York on February 20th.
Positive Trading Session
U.S. stocks closed higher, with the Nasdaq gaining 146 points. The upward trend reflects investor optimism amid ongoing economic developments and market resilience.
