Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Shea Stevens. President Trump says he and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi have discussed strengthening defense and economic ties between their nations. As NPR's Asma Khalid reports, their White House meeting on Thursday was held on the same day that Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on countries around the globe, including India.
Asma Khalid
The Trump administration says these new tariffs would not be ready until April at the earliest, but it is certainly significant for trade relations. Trump has repeatedly singled India out for its high tariff rates on US Imports. At his joint press conference with his Indian counterpart, Trump put it this way.
Donald Trump
I had discussions with India in the first term about the fact that their tariffs were very high and I was unable to get a concession. So we're just going to do it the easy way and we're just going to say whatever you charge, we charge.
Asma Khalid
The president also said that India's prime minister has agreed to begin negotiations over long running trade disparities with the goal of signing an agreement. Asma Khalid, NPR news.

Vice President J.D. vance is set to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday on the sidelines of the munich Security Conference. NPR's Deepa Shivaram reports that the US is taking a more active role in efforts to negotiate an end to the Russia Ukraine war.
Deepa Shivaram
Both Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet with Zelenskyy in Munich. Vance is also set to deliver remarks at the annual conference where the Russia Ukraine war has been a central focus since it started nearly three years ago. On Wednesday, President Trump held a lengthy phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and said the two would meet face to face in Saudi Arabia soon. Trump afterward also spoke with Zelensky over the phone. Vance spoke at the Munich security conference last year as well and said it was time for the US to pivot away from its focus on Europe and turn to China and East Asia as the future of U.S. foreign policy. The acting U.S. attorney in Manhattan, Danielle Sassoon, has resigned only days after the Justice Department ordered her to drop the criminal case against the mayor of New York. NPR's Ryan Lucas has details.
Ryan Lucas
Danielle Sassoon was appointed last month as acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, arguably the country's most prestigious but now a spokesperson for the office says Sassoon has quit. Her resignation comes just days after the Trump Justice Department leadership order ordered her to drop the corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The DOJ leadership said in a memo that it was directing the case be dropped, but had not assessed the strength of the evidence. Instead, it said the charges were brought too close to the city's mayoral election and that they interfered with Adams ability to help the Trump administration with immigration enforcement. U S Futures are flat in after hours trading on Wall Street. This is npr. Communities along the Pacific coast are getting pounded by a winter storm that's causing water and mud flows along hill slides in fire ravaged parts of Southern California. Bulldozers were being used to clear an intersection in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles that had become submerged in at least three feet of sludge to the north. The storm caused whiteout conditions and major pile ups along highways in Oregon and and in Washington State. Carnegie hall says its upcoming season will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of independence with a six month music festival and Harry Connick, Jr. Will be making his debut there as Jeff London reports from New York.
Jeff London
Harry Connick, Jr. The New Orleans born crooner, pianist, composer and arranger has never been on Carnegie Hall's main stage, but that will change next May.
Harry Connick Jr.
It had to be you. It had to be you. I wandered around.
Jeff London
Connick will present two evenings of his work, but May 22 will be extra special.
Donald Trump
He says that date is my mother's hundredth birthday. She always wanted me to play at Carnegie Hall.
Jeff London
Connick will premiere a three movement orchestral work with piano dedicated to his mother's memory on that evening. For NPR News, I'm Jeff London in New York.

NPR News Now: February 14, 2025 – Comprehensive Summary
Live from Washington, Shea Stevens brings you the latest updates across national and international headlines. This summary encapsulates the key discussions, insights, and developments featured in the February 14, 2025, episode of NPR News Now.
Key Developments: President Donald Trump and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened at the White House to deliberate on enhancing defense and economic collaborations between the two nations. This meeting, however, coincided with Trump's announcement of reciprocal tariffs targeting various countries globally, including India.
Notable Insights: Asma Khalid reports that the Trump administration anticipates the implementation of these new tariffs by April at the earliest. These tariffs mark a significant shift in trade relations, particularly highlighting India's high tariff rates on U.S. imports. Despite previous unsuccessful attempts to negotiate concessions, Trump stated, “whatever you charge, we charge” (01:00) during the joint press conference, underscoring the administration's equally retaliatory approach.
India's Response: Prime Minister Modi conceded to initiating negotiations aimed at addressing long-standing trade disparities, with the objective of finalizing a bilateral agreement. This willingness to negotiate suggests potential avenues for easing tensions and fostering mutually beneficial trade terms (01:13).
Key Developments: Vice President J.D. Vance is scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Munich Security Conference. This meeting signifies the U.S.'s enhanced role in mediating an end to the protracted Russia-Ukraine war.
Strategic Insights: Deepa Shivaram highlights that both Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will engage with Zelenskyy, with Vance slated to deliver pivotal remarks at the conference. This aligns with the U.S.'s strategic pivot from a Europe-centric focus to prioritizing relations with China and East Asia, as previously articulated by Vance (01:42).
Trump's Involvement: In a related development, President Trump engaged in extensive phone discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and subsequently with Zelenskyy, indicating a readiness to facilitate direct dialogue and possibly broker peace talks (01:42).
Key Developments: Danielle Sassoon, the acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, resigned shortly after the Department of Justice (DOJ) directed the termination of the criminal case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
Background: Appointed just a month prior, Sassoon's resignation signals significant shifts within the DOJ's legal strategy. NPR's Ryan Lucas reports that the DOJ leadership cited the proximity of the charges to the mayoral election and asserted that the case hindered Adams' ability to support the Trump administration's immigration enforcement efforts (02:34).
Implications: This development raises questions about the independence of the U.S. Attorney's office and the broader implications for prosecutorial discretion in politically sensitive cases.
Key Developments: A formidable winter storm is wreaking havoc along the Pacific Coast, leading to widespread water and mud flows, particularly affecting regions already devastated by wildfires in Southern California. Infrastructure has been compromised, with significant disruptions reported.
On-the-Ground Reports: Shea Stevens details the efforts to mitigate damage, including the use of bulldozers to clear submerged intersections in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, where sludge levels have reached at least three feet. Additionally, whiteout conditions have resulted in major vehicular pile-ups on highways across Oregon and Washington State (03:11).
Community Response: Emergency services are actively engaged in rescue and recovery operations, highlighting the resilience and response capabilities of local authorities in the face of natural disasters.
Key Developments: In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Carnegie Hall will feature a six-month music festival. A highlight of the season is the debut performance of Harry Connick Jr. on Carnegie Hall's main stage.
Artist's Tribute: Jeff London reports that Connick, renowned for his multifaceted talents as a crooner, pianist, composer, and arranger from New Orleans, is set to deliver two evenings of performances. The May 22 performance holds special significance, as Connick dedicates his three-movement orchestral work to his mother's memory, coinciding with her 100th birthday.
Personal Touch: During an interview, Connick reflected on this milestone, stating, “It had to be you. It had to be you. I wandered around” (04:14), expressing the emotional and personal importance of this event.
Family and Legacy: Connecting personal heritage with artistic expression, Connick shared with Donald Trump, “That date is my mother's hundredth birthday. She always wanted me to play at Carnegie Hall” (04:30), underscoring the deep familial motivations behind his performance.
Market Overview: US futures remained flat in after-hours trading on Wall Street, indicating a period of stability despite ongoing economic and political developments. Concurrently, Asian markets presented a mixed picture, with shares largely edging higher, albeit with Tokyo witnessing a slight decline (04:48).
Economic Indicators: These market movements reflect investor sentiments amid global trade tensions, geopolitical uncertainties, and domestic legal upheavals, highlighting the interconnectedness of global financial systems.
Conclusion: The February 14, 2025, episode of NPR News Now provided a comprehensive overview of pivotal events shaping the political, economic, and cultural landscape. From strained U.S.-India trade relations and intensified diplomatic efforts in the Russia-Ukraine conflict to significant legal resignations and impactful natural disasters, the episode encapsulated a broad spectrum of developments.
