Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nora Ramm. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to the Munich security conference today, seeking to reassure Europeans and that the Trump administration does not want to abandon the transatlantic alliance. He said the ties are deep and historic. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke to the conference. He asked for more help in fighting Russia nearly four years after Russia's full scale invasion.
Volodymyr Zelensky (0:43)
While we invest in interceptors and protection, Russia invests in breaking unity between all of us. Our unity with you, unity in Europe, unity in the Euro Atlantic community. They want to break it. Why? Because our unity is the best interceptor against Russia's aggressive plans.

He asked for speedier deliveries of air defense systems, that there isn't a single power plant in Ukraine not damaged by Russian airstrikes. Zelensky said any agreement to end the war must include real security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe. President Trump says he'll make an official visit to Venezuela and that he thinks the interim leader there is doing an excellent job. His comments yesterday highlight the close coordination and support between the U.S. and the new government after the U.S. removed its president. NPR's Carrie Khan reports.

Diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Venezuela were only recently re established after U.S. military forces captured former leader Nicolas Maduro. On January 3rd, Trump traveled to the Fort Bragg military base in North Carolina to meet with special forces involved in the operation. He told troops, quote, the entire world saw what the full military might of the US can do and ensured, quote, we are feared by potential enemies around the world. As he has repeatedly done in recent weeks, Trump said interim President Delsey Rodriguez, who was left in place to run the country, is doing a fine, fine job. Carrie Khan, NPR News, Rio de Janeiro.

A federal judge in Massachusetts has issued a preliminary injunction against federal immigration agents entering houses of worship to carry out enforcement actions. NPR's Jason DeRose reports.

In early 2025, the Trump administration rescinded guidance telling immigration agents to avoid making arrests at sensitive locations such as schools and houses of worship. A group of religious organizations from across the U.S. sued. Now a Massachusetts judge says such enforce at or near churches may violate the First Amendment by imposing a substantial burden on the exercise of religion. The injunction lays out some limited circumstances under which arrests could still take place, but largely prevents such actions until the case can be heard. In full. Jason DeRose, NPR News.
