Details@capitalone.com live from NPR News. In Washington, I'm Nora Ramm. Secretary of State Marco Rubio began a two day trip to Eastern Europe today because beginning in Slovakia for the first visit by a US Secretary of state in years, Rubio then traveled to Hungary, where he's expected to meet with President Viktor Orban tomorrow. He told reporters before he left for Europe last week that these countries are very strong, very cooperative with the U.S. federal officials have said the ICE agents deployed to Minneapolis are leaving, but local officials say it will take the city time to recover from the disruption. They say Minneapolis has lost more than $200 million in wages and hotel cancellations. Khalid Abdi sells cell phones there and hopes to get back in business.

Customers will start going back to work. It might take a couple months after they leave because people have to get back to their financial being stable.

Last month, officers killed two U.S. civilians, prompting calls for restrictions on immigration enforcement operations. That led to the shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, which has yet to be resolved. Congress is out of town. President Trump says he wants to nationalize this year's midterm elections, but the Constitution would get in the way. NPR's Mara Liasson reports.
D
Trump told podcast host Dan Bongino that he wants Republicans to, quote, take over the voting.
E
The Republicans should say we want to take over. We should take over the voting, the voting in at least many 15 places. The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting.
D
Election experts say that would be very hard, if not impossible. The Constitution clearly gives states and Congress, not the president, the right to conduct elections. But experts worry that Trump could undermine the vote. He's commandeered voter records in 11 states already and could move to disqualify certain voters. Ever since 2016, Trump has said he would only honor the results of elections. His side wins. That's what January 6th was all about. Mara Liasson, NPR News.

Iran says it's up to the US to prove it's ready to negotiate a new nuclear deal. The BBC's Lise Doucet reports. The country's foreign minister says Tehran is prepared to consider compromises if the US is willing to discuss lifting sanctions.
F
Mr. Thakht Rabanci said they were receiving messages in public and private that the US Was interested in reaching a deal. But he expressed concern about President Trump's conflicting signals. In his latest comments, the US Leader said regime change would be the best thing to happen in Iran. Takhtaravanji, who's playing a key role in this process, said that wasn't the message they were receiving in private. He also questioned America's military buildup in the region, warning that another war would be to dangerous for everyone.

The BBC's Lee's Doucet. This is NPR News. The CIA is looking for new informants in China. It's launched a video in Mandarin saying the ruling Communist Party is not looking out for Chinese citizens and that the way to help their country is to work for the U.S. u.S. Chinese officials often accuse the Chinese of hacking into U.S. businesses and agencies and using social media to gather information on Americans. American skier Mikayla Shifrin has come up short again, failing to win a medal in her latest event at the Winter Olympics, the women's giant slalom. Steve Futterman reports from Milan.

Mikayla Shifrin's medal drought continues as she finishes 11th in the Giants slalom. Shiffrin was in seventh place after the first run, then dropped four positions following the second run. It continues her streak of failing to win an Olympic medal. Back in 2014 in Sochi, as an 18 year old, Shiffrin won her first medal, a gold. Then eight years ago in Pyeongchang, she won a second gold and a silver. But in Beijing in 2022, as a big favorite in several events, she came away empty handed. The streak has continued so far here in Italy, Shiffrin has one more event on her Olympic schedule, so the women's slalom on Wednesday. That's considered her strongest event. For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman in Milan.

Brazil is celebrating its first medal of the Winter Olympics. Lucas Piniera Brothan won the gold in skiing. It does sometimes snow in the southern part of the country. He danced samba style on the podium and then dedicated his medal to his home country. I'm Nora Ramm, NPR News in Washington.
