Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. The Trump administration is considering its next steps after the Supreme Court struck down a key tariff authority on Friday. Treasury Secretary Scott Besant says the ruling is a loss for the American people.
C
By taking away President Trump's instantaneous leverage using the IPA authority, the American people have suffered a significant setback. Think to this time last year when President Trump put on the fentanyl tariffs against Mexico, Canada, China for the precursor chemicals. And then we saw a rapid decline in fentanyl deaths. If that's not an emergency authority, what was?
B
The justices ruled? President Trump exceeded his power under the law he used to impose several trade penalties. NPR's Nina Totenberg reports. Trump called the decision deeply disappointing.
D
An agitated Trump railed against Roberts and two Trump appointed justices who joined with the court's three liberals to strike down the Trump tariffs as unconstitutional.
E
They're just being fools and lapdogs for the RINOs and the radical left Democrats.
D
And that was hardly all. Trump called the three conservatives disloyal, unpatriotic and at one point launched into a rant about how the court should have invalidated the election results in 2018. Nina Totenberg, NPR News, Washington.

Police in Britain say they'll be searching royal properties through the weekend after the arrest of former Prince Andrew. The king's brother is suspected of passing government trade secrets to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. NPR's Lauren Frere reports. It's one of several police operations triggered by the latest release of Epstein files.
F
While Thames Valley police search Andrew's former residence, London police say they're assessing, with help from US Counterparts, whether the UK Capital's airports, including Heathrow, may have been used to, quote, facilitate human trafficking and sexual exploitation. They're also asking Andrew's current and former bodyguards to, quote, consider carefully whether they saw or heard anything that could be relevant to police. Bodyguards are believed to have accompanied Andrew to Epstein's island and elsewhere. Andrew settled a lawsuit years ago with one of Epstein's underage victims, but denies any wrongdoing. His arrest was on suspicion of what police call misconduct in public office, not for any sex abuse. Lauren Fryer, NPR News, London.

Forecasters say a winter storm could bring significant snow to parts of the mid Atlantic and Northeast this weekend Emergency officials from Washington, D.C. to Boston are preparing for the possibility of more than a foot of snow in some areas, along with strong winds and potential coastal flooding. The storm is expected to develop overnight, with snow picking up through the day on Sunday into Monday morning. Officials are also warning of potential power outages in some regions. This is NPR News in Washington. The Department of Homeland Security says it's moving forward with plans to build an immigration detention center in northwest New Jersey. Bruce Kahnbizer reports.

Rumors swirled all week that DHS was eyeing a 470,000 square foot warehouse in Roxbury Township, about 45 miles west of Manhattan, but local officials said Friday they were nonetheless blindsided by the deal. Roxbury's all Republican town Council had previously resolved to oppose any ICE detention center in town following DHS announcement. They vowed legal action to try and block the project. How much the property sold for was not immediately clear, but the township had offered its Previous owner $20 million in tax abatements to forego the sale. Purchasing warehouses and converting them to immigration detention centers is ISIS current modus operandi. From Maryland to Arizona, they're doing just that. For NPR News, I'm Bruce Konfeiser in Greenbrook, New Jersey.

OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, says it considered alerting Canadian authorities last year about the online activity of a woman accused of carrying out one of the deadliest mass shootings in the country's history. The company said its abuse detection systems flagged an account linked to the shooter in June, but ultimately determined the activity did not meet the threshold for law enforcement notification count, was later banned in June of 2025 for violating company policies. The 18 year old killed eight people in a remote area of British Columbia earlier this month before dying from a self inflicted gunshot wound. This is NPR News.
