Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. Air travelers across the country could lose access to TSA, precheck and global entry beginning today. NPR's Matt Bloom reports. The Department of Homeland Security says it's susp the programs as the partial government shutdown enters its second week.
Kristi Noem
In a statement, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said, quote, shutdowns have serious real world consequences. The current partial government shutdown has lasted more than a week as lawmakers have failed to reach a deal on funding for dhs. Democrats have been demanding changes to federal immigration operations. Noem blamed Democrats for the partial shutdown and said DHS would put resources towards serving the general traveling public and disaster response. Democrats on the House Committee on Homeland Security criticized the decision to pause special TSA programs, saying on social media that the Trump administration is punishing travelers. President Trump says he's raising his new global tariff to 15%. The increase came a day after the Supreme Court ruled he exceeded his authority in imposing sweeping tariffs. Speaking to ABC News, Yale Professor Natasha Sarin said she doesn't expect consumer costs to drop as a result of the ruling.
Natasha Sarin
While this decision provides some clarity, I think the kind of uncertainty is hugely damaging for the economy. That uncertainty is here with us and likely to stay for quite some time.

In a social media post, Trump said the higher rate takes effect immediately and signaled he may use other trade powers to add more import taxes. The tariffs have rattled global markets and add a new strain on the US Economy. American businesses and consumers are expected to absorb at least some of the added cost on imported goods. A major winter storm is bearing down on the Northeast, putting millions of people from Philadelphia to Boston under blizzard warnings. The alerts stretch from Delaware and Eastern Maryland through New Jersey and New York City into southern New England. Steve Kestenbaum reports. It's the second major storm for New York City in less than a month.

The soot covered piles of snow had finally melted away, and now they could be replaced by close to a foot and a half of snow by Monday. Mayor ZORAN mamdani these have the potential

to be even more hazardous conditions than we faced the last time around.

At least 19 people died on the streets of the city during January's cold snap. The mayor said. Caring for the homeless will be a priority in the days ahead.
Zoran Mamdani
Our focus is going to be utilizing every tool that we have to connecting homeless New Yorkers with a safe haven, with a shelter, with a warming bus.
Steve Kestenbaum
The storm will have a major impact on air travel in the Northeast. Many airlines preemptively canceled hundreds of flights. For NPR News, I'm Steve Kastenbaum in New York.

It's npr. The University of Mississippi Medical center has shut down clinics statewide after a ransomware attack. Nearly three dozen locations have been affected. Officials say treatments ranging from chemotherapy to elective surgeries have been disrupted, adopted. It's unclear how long the outage will last. The US And Canada will face off for the Olympic gold in men's ice hockey today. The rivalry, the star power and the high stakes could make it one of the most watched hockey games in years. NPR's Becky Sullivan has this preview.

Both teams are stacked with NHL talent with the pros participating for the first time in more than a decade. Canada boasts the three time MVP Connor McDavid, the NHL leading goal scorer Nathan McKinnon and the 19 year old phenom Macklin Celebrini, all in their top line. The U.S. roster includes five NHL team captains, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Austin Matthews and the league's best goaltender, Connor Hellebuk. Last year in the NHL, four nations face off. The Americans took the first game 3 to 1, but the Canadiens won the final 3, 2 on an overtime goal by McDavid. That's left the Americans hungry for revenge. Canada has won nine Olympic men's hockey gold medals all time. The U.S. only has two, the last, of course, in 1980 with the Miracle on Ice. Becky Sullivan, NPR News, Milan.

NASA has delayed the Artemis II lunar mission again after a problem with helium flow to the rocket's upper stage. Officials say steady helium flow is needed to pressurize the fuel tanks. They say the issue is not related to the hydrogen leaks that scrubbed a dress rehearsal earlier this month. I'm Windsor Johnston, NPR News, in Washington.
