Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. Snow continues to fall over parts of New England, while the rest of the Northeast and the Mid Atlantic states dig out from under as much as two and a half feet of snow in some places. Reporter Steve Kastenbaum is in New York, where cleanup from the blizzard is in full swing.

Over 2,000 sanitation department snowplows are working to clear up to 2ft of snow from the streets here. Mayor Zoran Mamdani said the city is hiring thousands of temporary workers to shovel snow due to the historic nature of this blizzard.

An emergency travel ban expired, but he asked people not to drive if possible so crews can get the city streets ready for commuters and the reopening of schools west of the city. Utility crews in New Jersey were dealing with thousands of power outages. Meanwhile, there's more snow in the forecast in the coming days. For NPR News, I'm Steve Kastenbaum in New York.

The Mexican government is sending in more soldiers following a military raid on Sunday that killed the country's most wanted cartel leader, a man known as El Mencho. Authorities say an additional 2,000 troops were deployed Monday to the western state of Jalisco, where security forces are battling cartel gunmen. NPR's Eder Peralta is in Guadalajara. He reports on El Mencho's significance.

Within the past 10 years, he turned the Jalisco New Generation cartel into one of the biggest organized crime groups in the world. They took over a whole lot of territory in Mexico and began operating outside the country, in Europe and the U.S. the U.S. says El Mencho's cartel trafficked billions of dollars worth of cocaine and fentanyl into the U.S. el Mencho has been indicted several times in American courts in the US had put a $15 million bounty on his head.

The White House has confirmed that the US Provided intelligence support to the initial raid, in which authorities say dozens of people were killed. Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown is suing the Department of Homeland Security to stop the creation of an immigrant detention facility. Scott Moscione with member station WYPR reports that ICE has been purchasing warehouses in multiple states seeking to increase capacity.
