Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says the Trump administration's military action in Iran is to end that country's missile program and to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons. He held a news conference this morning. Hegseth said the US did not start the war, but President Trump is finishing it. NPR's Greg Myhre says the U.S. and Israeli strikes have had an effect on Iran's leadership.

They've knocked out several Iran's supreme leader and other top leaders. So will that be sufficient? Will the US Try to help install somebody else? So he did leave open a lot of questions about what the goals are.

NPR's Greg Myhre reporting. President Trump has spoken to several media outlets, but he has not yet made a clear case to Americans about why his administration is joining with Israel to attack Iran. Meanwhile, the Pentagon says a fourth US Service person has died of wounds from attacks by Iran. Three other US Military personnel were killed over the weekend. Israel's military continues striking in Iran's capital, Tehran, as Iran's missile strikes on Israel have decreased. NPR's Daniel Estrin has more from Tel Aviv.

Iran's counter attacks in the region have now expanded to energy targets in the Gulf. Qatar Energy says attacks on two of its facilities forced the state owned company to halt production of LNG gas Monday. Qatar is one of the world's biggest exporters of gas. Also, oil giant Saudi Arabia says it shot down drones targeting its biggest oil refinery in the country's east. The military says debris caused a fire and that some refinery units were shut down as a precaution. Meanwhile, four vessels have been hit in Gulf waters since the war began Saturday. The latest was a tanker carrying nearly 600,000 barrels of gasoline bound for Saudi Arabia, according to Windward, a maritime intelligence platform. Omani security say the attack sparked a fire, killing one Indian crew member. Aya Baltrawi, NPR News, Dubai.
