Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dave Mattingly. The Senate is expected to vote today on a war powers resolution that seeks to limit President Trump's ability to carry out US Military operations against Iran. It's unclear if a resolution would pass in either the House or Senate. NPR's Claudia Grizales reports on what Senate Majority Leader John Thune is saying about the ongoing US And Israeli attacks.
Claudia Grizales
Thune says the president has broad authorities under Article 2 of the Constitution when it comes to defending America's national security interests.
John Thune
I think the president was perfectly within his right to take the steps that he took. I think it was a necessary step in order to protect American lives.
Claudia Grizales
However, Democrats and other critics of the war say the president should have consulted Congress, not just notified them of the plans. Thune is countering those arguments, saying the effort will eliminate a threat that could have cost countless numbers of Americans lives. The senator also acknowledged while many questions remain about what comes next, that is largely up to the Iranian people. Claudia Reiselles, NPR News, the Capitol.

The House is expected to vote on a war powers resolution before the end of the week. The US And Israel struck multiple targets in Iran again today, including ones in the capital, Tehran. Iran has sent drones and missiles into Israel. In Texas, state Representative James Talarico has been declared the winner over Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett in the state's Democratic Senate primary. Talarico will face the winner of a Republican primary runoff between incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn and the state's attorney general Ken Paxton in November. Blaze Gainey with the Texas Newsroom has more.
Blaze Gainey
Talarico took the stage right after midnight to let his supporters know that while every vote must be counted, he was confident in the outcome. That was before he was declared the winner. He used that time to drive home the reason he ran for the sea.
James Talarico
This is a people powered movement to take on this broken, corrupt political system. This is truly a campaign of, by and for the people.
Blaze Gainey
Texas Democrats haven't won a statewide race in over 30 years, but polls show Talarico could break that losing streak depending on who he faces in the primary. After he was officially awarded the Democratic spot, he sent out a press release saying, quote, we're about to take back Texas. For NPR News, I'm Blaise Gainey in

North Carolina's Senate primary. The state's former governor, Democrat Roy Cooper, will face off against the former chair of the Republican National Committee, Michael Whatley, in November's general election. The the Associated Press called the race for Cooper and Whatley in each party's primary. Cooper and Whatley are seeking the Senate seat currently held by Republican Thom Tillis. He's not seeking re election. This is NPR News. The Trump administration says it's decided to detain all unaccompanied migrant girls who are also pregnant in one shelter in South Texas. As Mark Bentoncourt reports, some government child welfare officials are questioning that move.
Mark Bettencourt
More than a dozen pregnant minors, some as young as 13, have been placed at the shelter. At least half became pregnant due to rape. Their pregnancies are considered high risk because of their age and require specialized care. Health experts worry that neither the facility nor the region can provide it. Annie Leone is a nurse midwife who's worked in the area. She says since Texas all but banned abortion, obstetric care has suffered.
Annie Leone
It's not good to be a pregnant person in Texas. So to put this community in Texas and then in one of the worst healthcare regions of Texas is not good.
Mark Bettencourt
Advocates say the government is putting the girls there to deny them access to abortion. The administration says that's, quote, completely inaccurate. For NPR News, I'm Mark Bettencourt.

The price of crude oil continues to rise on world markets as the US And Israel continue attacking Iran. The cost of Brent crude has jumped 15% since the attacks began to more than $83 a barrel. AAA says the average cost of regular gasoline in the US has risen another 9 cents a gallon since yesterday. It's now averaging almost $3.20 a gallon. Nationwide, Wall street is coming off another down day for stocks amid the fighting. The Dow lost 403 points yesterday. The S&P dropped 64. The Nasdaq was off more than 1%.
