Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. President Trump took questions from reporters yesterday about the US And Israeli war in Iran. He's been giving conflicting reasons for why he launched the attack. NPR's Mara Liasson says Trump declared what he's looking for.
Mara Liasson
Now, the dominant message was declaring victory. And after you declare victory, you tend to look for an off ramp. Quote, this was just an excursion. We're close to finishing very soon. He talked about. He said we've already won, but then in the next breath he said, but we haven't won enough and we're determined to achieve total victory.

NPR's Mara Liasson reporting. The U.S. and Israel continue to fire at Iran, and Iran is firing back at its neighbors. Bahrain says an Iranian attack hit a residential building in its capital. At least one person was killed. Officials in the United Arab Emirates say they've intercepted Iranian missiles and drones. The war has contributed to volatility in the oil markets. Officials with the Group of Seven industrialized nations spoke yesterday. They say they're prepared to release crude oil reserves to bolster world oil supply, but they haven't done it yet. Meanwhile, Energy Secretary Chris Wright says the US Is considering a release of oil from its own reserves. From Colorado Public Radio, Ishan Thakur has more.

During a tour of a natural gas plant in Colorado, Wright said the U.S. is considering, quote, coordinated releases of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The SPR sits on the Gulf coast and currently holds more than 400 million barrels of oil. The war in Iran is choking global oil supplies. A coordinated release from countries like the U.S. france, Canada and more could help stabilize prices. Here's Wright.

But we do have our gasoline and our diesel and our jet fuel prices up. That hurts American citizens, consumers. We are doing everything we can to alleviate that.
Ishan Thakur
The average gas price in the US has already jumped about 50 cents in a week, according to AAA. No decision has been made yet about a release. For NPR News, I'm Ishaan Thakur in Platteville, Colorado.

We were going to try to look at getting earlier flights, but we can't even get up to ask them at this point.

The Department of Homeland Security blamed the long lines on the partial government shutdown. Workers at the tsa, the Transportation Security Administration have been working without pay for more than three weeks after lawmakers and the White House failed to agree on changes to how immigration officers operate. You're listening to NPR News. There are more elections today. There's a special election in the Georgia congressional district formerly held by Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene. There are 17 candidates, all running against each other because party affiliation does not matter in today's Georgia election. Separately, Mississippi is holding its primary elections today to select candidates for this year's midterm elections. A new study finds that social media use can be linked to symptoms of mental health problems and substance abuse in children and adolescents. NPR's Ritu Chatterjee reports. The link between social media use and depression of was stronger for kids in their early teens.
Ritu Chatterjee
The study was a meta analysis of more than 150 previously published studies involving nearly 19,000 participants. Researchers found that social media use among children and adolescents was consistently associated with higher levels of depression, self harm, substance use and behavioral issues. It was also linked to poor academic performance and poorer perception of oneself. The study also looked at impacts of video games on kids and found them to be linked with aggression and other behavioral concerns. Video games were also linked to modest increases in attention and executive functioning. The results are published in JAMA Pediatrics. Ritu Chatterjee, NPR News.
