Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Ryland Barton. A man armed with a rifle rammed a vehicle into a major synagogue in a Detroit suburb and was fatally shot by security. The FBI says it was a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community. Stephen Engber is the CEO of the Jewish Federation Detroit.

Authorities say the vehicle caught on fire after crashing into the Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield Township. A security officer was knocked unconscious and 30 law enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation. One victim is dead and two people are wounded after a gunman burst into an ROTC classroom at Old Dominion University in Virginia today. Steve Walsh with WHRO and Norfolk has the story.

The gunman shot three people before killing himself. He was wrestled to the ground by his students. As FBI agent in charge of the Norfolk field office, Dominique Evans.

Police identified the gunman as Mohammed Jalal, a former Virginia National Guard specialist. Jalal was convicted in 2017 of attempting to plot an Islamic State inspired terrorist attack inside the U.S. he was sentenced to 10 years but was released in 2024. It's not clear what prompted this latest attack. The university has canceled classes through Friday. For NPR News, I'm Steve Walsh.
