The former president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, has appeared via video link for an initial hearing at the International Criminal Court. As Villa Marx reports, he faces charges of crimes against humanity.

A court spokesperson said Duterte would follow proceedings via video as he learned for the first time formally of the charges prosecutors have levelled against. The court was eventually told Duterte's long flight was the reason he did not appear in person following his transfer from Manila earlier this week. The presiding judge said a pretrial hearing would take place in September to confirm whether the evidence behind the charges was sufficiently strong for a trial to proceed. Arlington National Cemetery has removed historical sections about prominent African American, Hispanic and female vets from its website. That's According to a U.S. official not authorized to speak to the media. The official says it's in compliance with an order from top Pentagon officials to remove all DoD news and feature articles, photos and videos that promote diversity, equity and inclusion. Stories of many prominent vets like General Coleman Powell, the first African American chairman of the Joint Chiefs, can still be found. A SpaceX rocket is launched with four astronauts to the International Space Station. NPR's Jeff Bromfield reports. The launch is a big step toward getting two other astronauts home.

And on board are two NASA astronauts, a Japanese astronaut and a Russian cosmonaut. They'll be part of the next crew at the station. Their launch clears astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunny Williams to come back to Earth. Wilmore and Williams arrived at the station last June aboard an experimental spacecraft built by Boeing. But problems with that spacecraft caused NASA to send it home empty and extended the stay of Wilmore and Williams from roughly a week to to more than nine months. Jeff Brumfiel, NPR News.

On Wall street, The Dow rose 674 points. This is NPR. It's apparently a very large weather system and it's wreaking havoc in a big part of the country tonight. The storm system has brought tornadoes to the Midwest with threats looming from the Mississippi Valley into the Deep south through the weekend. National Weather Service says upwards of 100 million people could be affected, predicting the possibility of powerful wind gusts from the Canadian border to Texas, possibly fueling wildfires in some drier areas. In Oklahoma, high winds apparently toppled tractor trailers. The mayor of Miami beach is threatening to shut down a small independent movie theater that's been screening the film no other land. NPR's Mandalito Barko explains the documentary spotlights Israeli Palestinian conflicts.
