Live from NPR News. In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. President Trump is demanding that about seven countries send warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. It's been effectively shut down since the war against Iran started. Iran has fired on vessels there, but officials with Australia, Germany and Japan said they are not going to send ships to the strait. Meanwhile, Israel is also continuing to attack Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Officials say at least 800,000 people have fled and hundreds of people have been killed. NPR's Daniel Estrin reports. The Israeli military said today it has begun limited and targeted ground operations beyond the border area into new areas of southern Lebanon.
B
A person briefed on the matter, not authorized to speak publicly, speaking on condition of anonymity, told me that Israel intends to gradually increase its ground incursion deeper into Lebanon. And at the same time, there are a lot of efforts behind the scenes for direct ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Lebanon.

NPR's Daniel Estrin reporting. Gas prices continue to surge in the U.S. the motoring club AAA says they're now $3.72 a gallon. That's nearly 80 cents higher than a month ago, and it's due to the war in Iran. But NPR's Luke Garrett reports. The Trump administration insists the spike in gas prices will be short lived.
C
During the war, Iran has largely closed the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping lane for the world's oil and economy. But Energy Secretary Chris Wright told ABC News the war will, quote, certainly end soon.
D
The conflict will come to the end in the next few weeks and we'll see a rebound in supplies and a pushing down of prices after that.
C
The energy secretary then argued the war will ultimately make gas cheaper.
D
This is short term pain to get through to a much better place where the Middle east can no longer be held hostage by the one rogue nation in Iran.
C
But Wright also said there's no guarantees in wars. Luke Garrett, NPR News, Washington.

A major winter storm is pummeling the Midwest and Great Plains states. From member station wcmu, Rick Brewer reports. Blizzard conditions have closed the only bridge connecting Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas.
E
Local officials are asking people to stay home and only travel if necessary. Large parts of northern Michigan are also under an ice storm warning. The five mile Mackinac Bridge goes across the Straits of Mackinac, which connects Lake Huron and Lake Michigan at the tip of the Mitt. The only other way to travel between the peninsulas is through Wisconsin or Ontario, Canada. James Lake is a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Transportation.
F
Blowing winds and snow have made visibility so poor that it's not safe to cross the Mackinac Bridge.

Most of Iowa and Wisconsin and portions of Illinois and Minnesota are also being hit with blizzard conditions. For NPR News, I'm Rick Brewer in Midland, Michigan.
