In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. Health authorities in Gaza say Israeli airstrikes overnight have now killed at least 413 people and wounded hundreds of others. Victims include young children. The Israeli government wants Hamas to release more Israeli hostages and extend the ceasefire that has expired. Hamas says it wants to keep to the terms of the original ceasefire, which calls for a phase two of that agreement. NPs Hadil Al Shalchi says the immediate future is unclear for Gaza.
Hadil Al Shalchi
It might be a little too early to tell if the war is fully back on or what these strikes mean exactly for the ceasefire. You know, in recent weeks, Israel has been steadily increasing strikes in Gaza. Hamas hasn't yet responded with its own strikes. But today's assault is, of course, a pressure tactic by Israel to get Hamas to accept that extension. And they're a huge step back.

NPR's Hadil Al Shilci reporting. Trump administration officials say they have more information about a Lebanese doctor who was turned away at Boston's Logan Airport and sent Back to Lebanon. NPR's Tovia Smith reports. Administration officials claim the doctor was found with extremist materials linked to a group the US has designated as terrorists.

Officials say Rasha Alaway, a kidney transplant doctor affiliated with Brown University, went to Lebanon for the funeral of Hassan Nasrallah, the longtime leader of Hezbollah, a US Designated terrorist group, and that she expressed support for him. Court documents reportedly describe photos of him on her phone. Her lawyer, Stephanie Marzouk, declined to comment on those allegations, but says Alloway shouldn't have been denied due process.

The U.S. department of Veterans affairs will phase out treatment of gender dysphoria. NPR's Quill Lawrence reports. This follows President Trump's executive order to end any distinction between sex and gender by by the federal government.

Last week, the VA rescinded a memo that protected gender affirming care. And now VA Secretary Doug Collins says treatment for gender dysphoria will be discontinued. Collins said trans identifying vets are still welcome at the VA for other care. But advocates say the change in policy means they will not feel welcome or safe at VA facilities. And they warn that discouraging trans vets from getting critical health care will have dire consequences. VA research shows that trans veterans have higher rates of death by suicide. The VA provides healthcare and benefits for about 9 million veterans. VA estimates that fewer than 1/10 of 1% identify as trans. Quill Lawrence, NPR News.

Overview:
Health authorities in Gaza have reported a devastating toll from recent Israeli airstrikes, with at least 413 fatalities and hundreds more wounded, including numerous young children. The Israeli government is pressuring Hamas to release additional Israeli hostages and to agree to an extension of the recently expired ceasefire. However, Hamas maintains its stance, insisting on adhering to the original ceasefire terms, which include a subsequent phase two of the agreement.
Notable Quote:
“NPR’s Hadil Al Shalchi says, 'It might be a little too early to tell if the war is fully back on or what these strikes mean exactly for the ceasefire.'” [00:46]
Insights:
Hadil Al Shalchi further elaborates, noting that Israel has been intensifying its strikes in Gaza over recent weeks without reciprocal actions from Hamas. Today's latest assault is characterized as a strategic move by Israel to coerce Hamas into accepting a ceasefire extension, marking a significant escalation in the conflict.

Overview:
Rasha Alaway, a Lebanese doctor specializing in kidney transplants and affiliated with Brown University, was denied entry at Boston’s Logan Airport and deported back to Lebanon. The Trump administration asserts that Alaway was found in possession of extremist materials associated with Hezbollah, a group designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S.
Notable Quotes:
Stephanie Marzouk, Alaway’s lawyer, responded, “Alloway shouldn’t have been denied due process.” [01:30]
Marzouk further stated, “We're not gonna stop fight. Get her back in the US to see her patients where she should be, and we're going to try to make sure the government follows the rule of law.” [01:56]
Insights:
Court documents reveal that Alaway had photos of Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s leader, on her phone and expressed support for him during her trip to attend his funeral. Despite these allegations, her legal team argues that she was unjustly treated and denied the opportunity for due process, highlighting broader concerns about the balance between national security and individual rights.

Overview:
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced the discontinuation of treatment for gender dysphoria. This decision follows President Trump’s executive order aimed at eliminating distinctions between sex and gender within federal policies. The move has sparked significant backlash from advocates who argue it will marginalize transgender veterans and impede their access to essential healthcare.
Notable Quote:
VA Secretary Doug Collins stated, “Trans identifying vets are still welcome at the VA for other care.” [02:27]
Insights:
While Collins assures that transgender veterans can still access general healthcare services, advocates fear that the removal of gender dysphoria treatment will create an unwelcoming environment, potentially exacerbating mental health issues among trans veterans. VA research underscores the urgency, indicating higher suicide rates within the transgender veteran community. With the VA serving approximately 9 million veterans, even a small percentage affected by this policy change could have profound consequences.
