Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dan Ronan. US Allies in the Persian Gulf are taking material hits in the war against Iran and warning about intensified repercussions in the latest action in the region. Iran says Israel attacked its large southern gas field, and Tehran vowed retaliation against energy sites across the Gulf. NPR's Ava Batrani has the latest from Dubai.

Immediately after Israel's attack on Iran's South Pars gas field, the Gulf Arab states of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates issued statements calling it a dangerous escalation. Qatar said Israel's attack targeted the Iranian side of the underwater gas field the two countries share. It said the attack is a threat to global energy security and the environment. The uae, meanwhile, said the attack exposes civilians, vital facilities and the environment to direct risks. Soon after, though, Qatar Energy said its Ras Lefan industrial city was hit by missiles, resulting in fires and extensive damage. Qatar, one of the world's biggest producers of liquefied natural gas, has already suspended production due to Iranian counterattacks in the war. And Saudi Arabia says its forces destroyed drones approaching a gas plant in the east on Wednesday, as well as drones aimed at Riyadh's diplomatic quarter, where the US Embassy has already been hit. Senator Markway Mullen, President Trump's pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security, faced pushback from senators, including one Republican at his confirmation hearing Wednesday. Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky sought to challenge Mullen's fitness for the job, saying Mullen had anger issues. And he confronted Mullen over statements he made when Paul was attacked by a neighbor in 2017.
Senator Rand Paul
Today, I'll give you that chance to clear the record. Tell it to my face. If that's what you believe, tell it to me today. Tell the world why you believe I deserve to be assaulted from behind, have six ribs broken and a damaged lung. Tell me to my face why you think I deserved it.

Mullen insists he'll be a steady hand at the department would follow President Trump's immigration policies. Stocks stumbled today as the Federal Reserve held interest rates steady. NPR Scott Horsley reports. The Fed is sticking to its forecast of 1/4 rate cut.

The war with Iran has already triggered a sharp jump in gasoline and diesel prices, but Fed Senate Chairman Jerome Powell says it's too soon to tell how big or lasting that effect might be. Powell's term as chairman is set to expire in May, but President Trump's pick to replace Powell has not been confirmed yet, so he may end up serving longer.
Jerome Powell
If my successor is not confirmed by the end of my term as chair, I would serve as chair pro tem until he is confirmed. That is what the law calls for and it's what we're going to do in this situation.
Scott Horsley
A Republican senator is blocking the confirmation of Kevin Warsh's Fed chair until the Justice Department drops its investigation of the Fed. The the federal judge ruled that probe is simply a pressure tactic to get the central bank to lower interest rates. Scott Horsley, NPR News, Washington.

And you're listening to NPR News from Washington. Therapists at Kaiser Permanente in Northern California and the Central Valley are holding a 24 hour strike. As NPR's Ritu Chatterley reports, the protest is in part over concerns about artificial intelligence.

The providers on strike are citing violations of state and federal mental health laws by Kaiser Permanente. The company has paid millions of dollars to California and the federal government for failing to provide adequate and timely mental health care. The striking workers are concerned that Kaiser's use of AI will take their jobs and further affect patient care. Ileana Marcucci Morris is a social worker at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland.

I fear for the future around AI being used more for behavioral healthcare because what we do is human work.
Ritu Chatterley
Kaiser told NPR in an email that the company does not use AI to make medical or any other care decisions. Read the Chatterjee, NPR News.

The nation's largest retail trading group, the National Retail Federation, said Wednesday that annual retail sales this year will increase by 4.4%. That's higher than last year, and it comes despite the volatility in the economy because of the U. S, Israeli war against Iran and higher oil prices. The Treasury Department on Wednesday issued a license to Venezuela's state run oil company that allows it to sell and export Venezuelan oil to US Buyers in global markets. It's a way for the Trump administration to get more international oil into the marketplace and attempt to lower oil prices which have soared because of the war. I'm Dan Ronan, NPR News.
