Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jack Spear. President Trump has signed an executive order he says will start to eliminate the Department of education. More from NPR's Deepa Chevron.
Deepa Shivaram
Trump's order vastly scales down the Education Department, but it can't be entirely eliminated because that would require an act of Congress. The president cited reading and math test scores that declined during the pandemic as one of the reasons to close down the department, which has already laid off hundreds of staff.
Donald Trump
We're not doing well with the with the world of education in this country, and we haven't for a long time, trump said.

With Washington pulling back support for the investigation of war crimes committed by Russia and future US Military and financial backing for Kyiv uncertain, the EU is restating it will increase its commitment on those counts to strengthen Ukraine leaders except for Hungary's. Viktor Orban agreed on the new declaration at the top of a summit also aimed at boosting investment in Europe's own defenses. As Lithuanian President Gitanis Nausede advocated on.

Home sales rose last month. NPR's Laura Wamsley reports.
Laura Wamsley
Analysts had expected home sales to drop in February, as they had the month before, but instead, sales of existing homes rose more than 4% over January at a seasonally adjusted rate, and prices kept climbing. The median home price reached $398,000, the highest ever for the month of February. As the spring buying season warms up, more homes are coming on the market. Inventory is up 17% from a year ago, but affordability remains a big challenge as mortgage rates stay well above 6%. The housing market has been strongest at the top recently, but with the stock market taking a hit in recent weeks, the demand for luxury homes could soft. Laurel Wamsley, NPR News, Washington.

NPR News Now: Detailed Summary of March 20, 2025, 6 PM EDT Episode
Hosted by NPR
Key Points:
Executive Order Introduction: President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at significantly reducing the size and scope of the Department of Education. While the order seeks to diminish the department's influence, a complete elimination would necessitate congressional approval, which the order does not achieve.
Rationale Behind the Order: The administration cites declining reading and math test scores observed during the pandemic as a primary reason for restructuring the department. This move aligns with broader efforts to overhaul federal education policies and reduce governmental oversight in education.
Impact on Educational Programs: Critical programs such as Pell Grants, Title I resources, and funding for students with disabilities and special needs will remain operational. However, their management will be transferred to other federal departments and agencies to ensure continuity of support for vulnerable student populations.
Notable Quotes:
Donald Trump (00:42): “We're not doing well with the world of education in this country, and we haven't for a long time.”
Deepa Shivaram, NPR News (00:50): “Things like Pell Grants, Title I resources and funding for students with disabilities and special needs will remain intact, but will be managed by other departments and agencies.”
Key Points:
Legal Action: A federal judge in the White House has issued a temporary block preventing Elon Musk's Doge Group from accessing certain Social Security Administration (SSA) records. The judge characterized the request as a "phishing expedition," suggesting that the attempt lacks legitimate intent.
Context of the Block: This legal maneuver is part of President Trump's broader initiative to combat fraud and waste within the SSA. The SSA holds sensitive, personally identifiable information of millions of Americans, making unauthorized access a significant concern.
Key Points:
EU Consensus: European leaders convening in Brussels have unanimously reiterated their support for Ukraine, regardless of potential shifts in the Trump administration's policies. All EU member states, except Hungary, have endorsed this stance.
Hungary's Position: Hungary, under Prime Minister Viktor Orban, remains aligned with Moscow, diverging from the collective EU consensus on supporting Ukraine.
Enhanced EU Commitments: In response to possible reductions in US military and financial aid to Kyiv, the EU has pledged to bolster its own support mechanisms. This includes increasing investments in defensive capabilities and intensifying efforts to investigate and prosecute alleged Russian war crimes.
Notable Quotes:
Gitanas Nausėda, Lithuanian President (02:01): “We should increase the pressure on Russia. We have to rearm ourselves because otherwise we will be the next victim of Russian aggression.”
Mette Frederiksen, Danish Prime Minister (02:10): “Intelligence on the Russian threat indicates Europe must be ready to completely defend itself within three to five years.”
Key Points:
Surprising Uptick: Contrary to analysts' predictions of declining home sales in February, the market saw a more than 4% increase in existing home sales compared to January. This surge indicates resilience in the housing sector despite economic uncertainties.
Rising Home Prices: The median home price climbed to $398,000, marking the highest February median ever recorded. This price increase reflects sustained demand and limited affordability.
Market Inventory and Affordability: While housing inventory has risen by 17% year-over-year, affordability remains a significant barrier for many buyers. Elevated mortgage rates, currently above 6%, contribute to this challenge.
Luxury Market Outlook: The robust performance has been most notable in the higher-end segment of the market. However, with recent downturns in the stock market, there is speculation that demand for luxury homes may weaken in the near future.
Notable Quotes:
Key Points:
Key Points:
Award Introduction: The prestigious Glenn Gould Prize, often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of the Arts," has been awarded to Sir Elton John. This accolade recognizes his significant contributions to the arts and his humanitarian efforts.
Elton John's Achievements: Beyond his illustrious music career, Elton John is celebrated for his activism in combating HIV/AIDS and his advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights. His selection places him among a distinguished group of previous laureates, including Yo-Yo Ma, Leonard Cohen, and Philip Glass.
Notable Quotes:
Key Points:
Volcanic Activity: Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, has resumed erupting after a week-long pause. The eruption features lava fountains reaching heights of up to 700 feet.
Safety Measures: The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the molten rock remains contained within the national park boundaries, posing no immediate threat to nearby residential areas.
Eruption History: Since the initial eruption began last December, Kilauea has experienced intermittent activity, with the volcano ceasing and reigniting over a dozen times.
Key Points:
