Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. There has been a deadly crash at one of New York's major airports. LaGuardia, a regional jet operated by Air Canada hit a fire truck upon landing late last night. The nose of the jet has been ripped off and the pilot and the co pilot have been killed. The fire truck was apparently going to investigate an odor in a different jet at the airport when the crash happened. Katherine Garcia is the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. She says the National Transportation Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation.
B
It is anticipated that the airport will be closed at least until 2pm this afternoon to facilitate the investigation by NTSB, which has already begun to be on site.

She also says 41 people were taken to the hospital. Most of them have been released, but of those who are still hospitalized, some people are seriously injured. The partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security is beginning its fifth week. Americans are feeling the strain at airports. Transportation Security Administration workers are going without pay. Starting today, President Trump says he'll deploy federal immigration agents to airports to help TSA checkpoints. NPR's Luke Garrett says Trump has put his border czar, Tom Homan, in charge.
C
Homan said, you know, he was still working with TSA and ICE to finalize a deployment plan. Homan called the operation a, quote, work in progress. But he, he did give some parameters on the tasks ICE will and won't be doing. Homan said he expects ICE agents to guard exits and entry points at the nation's busiest airports. And he told CNN ICE agents will leave the specialized security work to TSA.

NPR's Luke Garrett reporting. President Trump's deadline to Iran expires tonight. He says the US Will destroy Iran's power plants unless Tehran fully reopens the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is warning it will retaliate. The head of the International Energy Agency says the Mideast fuel crisis poses a major threat to the global economy. Fatih Birol spoke during an official visit to Australia. Christina Kukulya has this report.
D
Speaking in Canberra, Fatih Birol said 40 energy assets in nine countries have been severely damaged in the war between the us, Israel and Iran. The head of the International Energy Agency said the resulting oil and gas crisis is already worse than the energy CR crises of the 1970s.
E
More than two major oil shocks put together.
D
He added that it's also had a worse effect on gas than the Russia Ukraine war. Australia has signed the deal with Singapore to maintain supplies of diesel and gas. Neighbouring New Zealand says it will temporarily allow imports of fuel meeting Australian standards to give importers access to more options and reduce the risk of disruptions. For NPR News, I'm Christina Kokola in Melbourne, Australia.

On Wall street and premarket trading, Dow futures are lower. It's NPR TODAY. Show host Savannah Guthrie has released another written family statement online. She is again urging anyone with information to come forward about her missing 84 year old mother, Nancy. It is believed that Nancy Guthrie was abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona, around January 31st. The Guthrie family also thanked well wishers for their support. Voters in Paris have again elected a Socialist mayor. Emmanuel Gregoire will succeed fellow party member Anne higalgo in office. NPR's Rebecca Rossman has more from Paris.
F
Emmanuel Gregoire's victory on Sunday means the center left Socialists will remain in control of the French capital. The party has governed Paris for 25 years. Gregoire, a former deputy mayor under Hidalgo, faced the conservative candidate Rashida Dati, who was backed by the far right National Rally Party. Gregoire was seen biking to City hall last night where he delivered his victory speech. Paris is not and never will be a city of the extreme right, he said. The Paris mayor's race was one of some 1500 local contests decided in the final round of Sunday's municipal elections. Despite some predictions of big gains for the far right, the traditional left and right parties largely held onto power. Rebecca Rossman, NPR News, Paris.
