Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. President Trump says the US And Iran are talking. Trump told reporters that his administration is engaged in talks with Iran and laid out objectives for how to end the conflict. NPR's D. Pashivron reports. The president says both countries will meet to end the war, quote, very, very soon.

President Trump says an end to the war with Iran would involve an agreement of no more enriched uranium for Iran and a removal of the material they already have.

How the US Would remove the enriched uranium is unclear. The president said we'll take it ourselves. Trump posted on social media that because talks with Iran were productive over the last few days and are set to continue, the US Will postpone strikes on Iranian power plants and energy sites for the next five days. Iran's Foreign ministry denies having dialogue with Trump. Deepa Shivaram, NPR News.

The White House oil prices retreated following Trump's remarks, but Brent crude has since moved back above $100 a barrel in Asia. President Trump has a new Homeland Security secretary, Mark Wayne Mullen, the Oklahoma Republican was confirmed by the Senate Monday night by a vote of 54 to 45. Mullen takes over a department that has been shut down for more than a month, as NPR's Elena Moore reports.

It's been a busy few weeks for Mullen, who tapped to replace Kristi Noem as secretary of DHS at the beginning of March. He sped through the confirmation process. But now Mullen faces a fresh set of challenges. Congress is scheduled to go on recess at the end of the week, but party leaders remain at odds over how to end the DHS shutdown. Trump is also pressuring lawmakers to prioritize passing the Save America act, which would require proof of citizenship to vote. So if lawmakers go on recess without a deal, Mullen may be taking over a department where nearly half its workers aren't getting paid. Elena Moore, NPR News.

A deal seems to be in the works to bring the DHS shutdown to an end. Senators are reported to be discussing a measure to fund much of the department, but not ICE's enforcement and removal operations. Central issues in the standoff Long lines at major airports because of the DHS shutdown are impacting the investigation into Sunday night's crash at New York's LaGuardia Airport. Jennifer Homendy is chair of the National Transportation Safety Board she says one of her investigators spent three hours at a TSA line in Houston. So it's been a really, really big challenge to get the entire team here.

Two pilots were killed in the crash between an Air Canada jet and a fire truck that had been given the green light to cross a Runway. Dozens of people were rushed to the hospital. This is NPR News. The death toll from the crash of a military cargo plane in Colombia is rising. Officials now say at least 60 were killed and that rescuers are still looking for several who remain missing. The Defense Department is revising its media policy. Monday's announcement came after a judge sided with the New York Times in a lawsuit over the limits the Pentagon imposed on reporters. A Pentagon spokesman says the new media policies are effective immediately, but that the Defense Department will appeal the ruling. Pfizer says an experimental vaccine to protect people from Lyme disease appears to be effective. NPR's Rob Stein reports.

The drug maker Pfizer is developing a Lyme disease vaccine with a French biotech company. Pfizer says the vaccine reduced the risk of catching Lyme disease in a study involving more than 9,000 volunteers by about 74%. Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria transmitted by tick bites and can cause flu like symptoms as well as more serious complications, including arthritis and neurological problems. Rob Stein, NPR News.

The Asian financial markets are mostly rebounding. The benchmarks in Japan, Australia, South Korea and China are rising in Tuesday trading, South Korean shares leading the way up more than 2%. Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei is up 6/10 of a percent. Oil prices are also rebounding back above $100 a barrel in Asia. They had eased after President Trump said he had talked with Iran about a pot end to the war. I'm Giles Snyder, NPR News.
