In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. The White House National Security Council says it is reviewing an incident. A journalist says he was apparently inadvertently added to a group chat where top administration officials discussed planned U.S. military action. NPR's Chamara Keith reports.
Tamara Keith
Atlantic magazine's editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg somehow got included in a group chat on the messaging app Signal where the secretary of defense, secretary of state, national security advisor and others were discussing plans for an attack on Houthi rebels in Yemen. When asked about the story and the breach hours after it came to light, President Trump said it was news to him.
Donald Trump
Well, it couldn't have been very effective because the attack was very effective. I can tell you that. I don't know anything about it. You're telling me about it for the first time.
Tamara Keith
A spokesman for the National Security Council confirms the chat, which broke with long standing national security protocol, appears to be authentic. Tamara Keith, NPR News.

The Trump administration is now invoking state secrets privilege in a case involving deportation flights. NPR's Joel Rose reports a judge is continuing to demand more information about them.
James Boasberg
Federal Judge James Boasberg has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deporting alleged Venezuelan gang members under a rarely used wartime law. And Boasberg is pushing the Trump administration to explain whether it defied his orders when it allowed two deportation flights to continue. But the Justice Department has stonewalled, refusing to answer the judge's questions about the timing and other operational details of the flights. Now the Justice Department is invoking the state secrets privilege, arguing in a court filing that answering the judge's questions, even under seal, would harm, quote, diplomatic and national security concerns. Meanwhile, in a related development, a U.S. appeals Court panel heard the Trump administration's challenge to Judge Boas book's order about using the wartime power to deport the migrants. But one appeals court panel judge told administration lawyers, quote, nazis got better treatment under the wartime power. The Trump administration lawyers sharply refuted that the wife of Vice President Vance is to visit Greenland this week. Mrs. Vance will be joined by Trump administration officials on a trip that is seen as fraught. President Trump has repeatedly said the US Will take over Greenland. The world's largest island is rich in critical minerals. But NPR's Deepa Shivaram says Greenland is a territory of Denmark.
Deepa Shivaram
In an interview with a Greenlandic newspaper over the weekend, the prime minister of Greenland said that the visit from members of the Trump administration was very aggressive. He said that Greenland has to face the seriousness of this situation, of the US Wanting to annex them now. Trump, for his part, says this isn't a provocation. He says it's a purely friendly visit and claimed that the US Was invited to visit Greenland, though NPR is not able to confirm if there was an invite.

NPR's Deepa Shivaram reporting. You're listening to NPR. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has a Senate confirmation hearing today. He's President Trump's nominee to be ambassador to Israel. Huckabee is a longtime supporter of Israel and a well known evangelical Christian. He has spoken favorably of several of Israel's views. One of them includes the potential Israeli annexation of Palestinian territory that would contradict long standing US Policy and is opposed by other nations. The critically acclaimed hit drama Adolescence is getting more than just views on Netflix. It has sparked a conversation in the UK about the influence of social media on some boys and young men. NPR's Giles Snyder has more.
Giles Snyder
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told the BBC Monday that the government should not shrug its shoulders at the problem laid bare by adolescents, a four part series that follows a family in crisis after their teenage son is arrested for killing a female classmate. Starmer said combating misogynistic behavior pushed by some social media influencers is a challenge that must be picked up. He made his first comments about the show and it seemed last week when he was asked about it in Parliament.
Keir Starmer
This violence carried out by young men influenced by what they see online is a real problem. It's abhorrent and we have to tackle it.
Giles Snyder
Adolescence is the most watched show on Netflix right now. Trial Snyder, NPR News.

NPR News Now: Comprehensive Summary of March 25, 2025 Episode
Release Date: March 25, 2025
Host: Korva Coleman
In a concerning breach of national security protocols, Jeffrey Goldberg, Editor-in-Chief of Atlantic magazine, was inadvertently added to a private group chat on the secure messaging app Signal. This chat included high-ranking officials such as the Secretary of Defense, Secretary of State, and the National Security Advisor, who were discussing planned U.S. military action against Houthi rebels in Yemen.
When questioned about the incident, President Donald Trump stated, “[00:55] 'Well, it couldn't have been very effective because the attack was very effective. I can tell you that. I don't know anything about it. You're telling me about it for the first time.'” This response has raised alarms about the administration's handling of sensitive communications. A National Security Council spokesperson confirmed the group chat's authenticity, emphasizing that its existence violates established security measures. The incident underscores the potential vulnerabilities within governmental communication channels and the critical importance of safeguarding classified information.
The Trump administration is embroiled in a legal battle over the deportation of alleged Venezuelan gang members, invoking the state secrets privilege to withhold critical information from the courts. Federal Judge James Boasberg temporarily blocked the deportations under a wartime authority rarely applied in peacetime scenarios. Judge Boasberg has persistently sought detailed explanations regarding the operational aspects and timing of the deportation flights.
Despite repeated subpoenas, the Justice Department has remained reticent, arguing that disclosing such details would jeopardize “diplomatic and national security concerns” ([01:25]). This invocation of state secrets suggests that the administration is intent on protecting potentially sensitive governmental operations from judicial scrutiny. The situation escalated when an appeals court panel heard the administration's challenge to Judge Boasberg's orders, where a panel judge controversially remarked, “[02:00] 'Nazis got better treatment under the wartime power,'” highlighting the contentious nature of using wartime laws in current deportation practices. The administration has robustly refuted this comparison, maintaining that their actions are justified under the invoked legal framework.
A diplomatic visit to Greenland has become a focal point of contention, with the wife of Vice President Ken Vance set to travel alongside Trump administration officials. This visit is perceived as provocative, given President Trump's repeated assertions that the United States intends to annex Greenland—a move met with strong resistance from Danish authorities, as Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
In an interview with a Greenlandic newspaper, Greenland's Prime Minister described the visit as “very aggressive” and emphasized the island's determination to resist any attempts at annexation. “[02:43] 'Greenland has to face the seriousness of this situation, of the US wanting to annex them now.'” Conversely, President Trump has downplayed the visit, labeling it as non-provocative and asserting that it was a “purely friendly visit,” although NPR could not verify whether an official invitation was extended. The strategic significance of Greenland, rich in critical minerals, adds layers of geopolitical tension to the visit, raising questions about future U.S. ambitions in the Arctic region.
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee appeared before the Senate for his confirmation hearing as President Trump's nominee for Ambassador to Israel. Huckabee is recognized for his long-standing support of Israel and his prominence within evangelical Christian circles. However, his nomination has sparked debate due to his favorable stance on potential Israeli annexation of Palestinian territories—a position that contradicts longstanding U.S. policy and faces opposition from various international allies.
Critics argue that Huckabee's views could undermine U.S. diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, particularly concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Supporters, on the other hand, laud his commitment to a strong U.S.-Israel alliance and his efforts to uphold Israel's security interests. The hearing underscores the complex interplay between personal convictions, political appointments, and international relations in shaping U.S. foreign policy.
The critically acclaimed Netflix series "Adolescence" has not only captivated global audiences but also ignited a significant conversation in the United Kingdom regarding the influence of social media on young males. The four-part drama, which follows a family grappling with the aftermath of a teenage son's involvement in a violent crime, has prompted reflections on the role of online platforms in shaping behavior.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer addressed the issue in an interview with the BBC, stating, “[04:23] 'This violence carried out by young men influenced by what they see online is a real problem. It's abhorrent and we have to tackle it.'” Starmer emphasized the need for proactive measures to combat misogynistic behavior propagated by certain social media influencers. The government's acknowledgement of the issue highlights the broader societal challenges posed by digital media and its impact on youth behavior and mental health.
In South Korea, severe wildfires continue to ravage the southern provinces, posing a significant threat to the nation's cultural heritage. Among the structures at risk was a Buddhist temple with over a thousand years of history. Fortunately, the temple's treasures were successfully relocated before the flames engulfed the building, sparing invaluable artifacts from destruction.
The ongoing wildfires underscore the escalating challenges posed by climate change and environmental management in the region. Efforts to protect and preserve cultural landmarks amidst natural disasters are becoming increasingly critical, as communities strive to maintain their historical legacy against the backdrop of evolving environmental threats.
