Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Shea Stevens. President Trump says he's slapping 25% tariffs on all imported cars and auto parts beginning April 3rd. Trump says the levies will foster domestic car manufacturing and put a financial squeeze on automakers that now depend on global supply chains. Industry analysts say it will lead to higher prices. The European Commission says it will consider a response to the new US tariffs. Terry Schultz reports that the EU's executive branch also says it is still open to negotiate its solutions.
Ursula von der Leyen
European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen says she deeply regrets the new penalties that will affect European Union car exports to the U.S. in a statement, von der Leyen calls the automotive industry a driver of innovation, competitiveness and high quality jobs on both sides of the Atlantic, and she says the tariffs will be bad for businesses and consumers on both sides. She says the bloc will assess President Trump's decision along with other potential measures the administration may take and decide what response will be needed to safeguard the EU's economic interests. The EU pushed back until mid April the start of retaliatory tariffs on US goods imposed due to the Trump administration's earlier imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. For NPR News, I'm Terri Schultz in Brussels.

The Atlantic has released the group chat message that its editor in chief received earlier this month during planning for a US Attack in Yemen. The messages show Defense Secretary Pete Hegsep giving a timeline for the attack using an encrypted app. A transcript of the group chat was published after Trump administration officials insisted that the information was not classified. Democrats on Capitol Hill disagree and are now demanding more information and an investigation. Energy, security, trade and tourism are high on the agenda today as Secretary of State Marco Rubio heads to Guyana and Suriname. As NPR's Michelle Kellerman reports, Rubio's met yesterday with Caribbean leaders in Jamaica.

The State Department's website advises Americans to reconsider travel to Jamaica because of high crime rates and the lack of medical services. Prime Minister Andrew Holness told Rubio that Jamaica is safer than it's been in decades.

French President Macron says a proposed European armed force in Ukraine could respond to a Russian attack. EU leaders are meeting on the matter in Paris. This is npr. A federal appeals panel has denied the Trump administration's request to allow the use of a wartime law to deport Venezuelan migrants. The administration invoked the Alien Enemies act to fly alleged Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador nearly two weeks ago and refused a judge's order to bring them back. The appeals court says the administration has so far failed to show that it can win its lawsuit against court orders blocking the deportations. Shifting winds and dry weather are fueling a pair of massive wildfires in the South Carolina mountains, prompting evacuations. More from South Carolina Public Radio's Scott Morgan.

Ground crews are battling rugged terrain as they work to contain the fires at Table Rock and Persimmon Ridge. And a shift in winds Tuesday provided another obstacle, says Madeline Stewart of the South Carolina Forestry Commission.
Marco Rubio
Those high winds and that extreme fire behavior caused the fire to move in the opposite direction from what we were expecting.

From Tuesday to Wednesday, both blazes grew significantly, with the Table Rock fire doubling and the Persimmon Ridge fire tripling in size. Stewart says 20 additional crews have been called in and containment lines have been moved farther away. For NPR News, I'm Scott Morgan in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
