Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman. President Trump spoke with the new Canadian prime minister on Friday. It was the first time the two have spoken. They discussed a potential trade war between the two countries. Afterward, Trump said the call was extremely productive. Carney agreed that with that sentiment, but added that Canada cannot be pushed around. Canada is strong, but we're even stronger when we are united. And our response to these latest tariffs is to fight, to protect and to build. Carney's office says negotiations over a new relationship with the U.S. will begin after Canada's election, which takes place on April 28. The D.C. circuit Court of Appeals says President Trump can fire two members of independent agencies. That ruling comes after a lower court ordered the members reinstated. NPR's Andrea Hsu has more on that story.

President Trump fired National Labor Relations Board member Gwen Wilcox in January and Merit Systems Protection Board member Kathy Harris in February. Both were Democratic members of independent agencies that handle workplace related complaints. Federal law says presidents can only fire members of those agencies for cause like neglect of duty or malfeasance. And for 90 years, the Supreme Court has upheld held those restrictions at agencies with multiple members like the two in question. But the Trump administration says such restrictions are unconstitutional. The government says the president is accountable for what happens in the executive branch and therefore can control it as he sees fit. Andrea Hsu, NPR News.

A pair of wildfires have burned more than 10,000 acres in the South Carolina mountains, and officials there say the conditions are making wildfires almost inevitable. South Carolina Public Radio's Scott Morgan reports.

It's been a week since a fire at Table Rock Mountain ignited and almost a week since a second fire sparked at Persimmon Ridge. Air crews have dropped nearly three quarters of a million gallons of water, but there has not been any containment. Governor Henry McMaster said conditions have been ideal for a conflagration.
Dale Willman
We've never had quite a fire quite like this. We've had some big ones. You've seen the movie the Perfect Storm. Well, this, this might be the perfect fire.
Scott Morgan
A combination of dry, windy sunny days and forest debris is feeding both fires. Trees felled by Hurricane Helene are also impeding access for crews trying to reach parts of the blazes. For NPR News, I'm Scott Morgan in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

The FAA has opened an investigation into a close call on Friday near Reagan International airport in Washington, D.C. they say the incident occurred between a Delta commercial jet and a US Air Force jet. The airport was the site earlier this year of a crash commercial jetliner and a military helicopter. Stocks finished broadly lower on Wall Street. The dow was down 715 points. The NASDAQ closed down 481 points. The S&P 500 closed down 112 points. This is NPR News. Ukraine came under a barrage of drone attacks Friday night as Russia continues to target its cities. NPR Sellinger Beardsley reports that at least four people died and 15 others were injured in the eastern city of Dnipro.

A roof collapsed in one area in Dnipro. Trapp. People underneath, Guys, whoever's in Nepro, can you come help? Implores a woman at the site in a video posted on social media. In PR is in Nepo and went to another place in the city where a restaurant hotel complex was hit and several people were injured. Firefighters were still fighting the blaze and would not allow us close. They began to yell because they feared a secondary strike.
Dale Willman
Air strike. Yeah, let's go, man. There's a secondary strike.
Andrea Hsu
Follow up.

Our security agent hurries us away. There was no secondary strike this time, but it was just a typical evening in Ukraine as Russia keeps up its daily attacks. Eleanor Beardsley, NPR News, Dnipro, Ukraine.

Officials in Myanmar say the damage from a powerful earthquake that hit the region on Friday is extensive. The initial death toll has already climbed above 140 and and they say that number is likely to rise in the days ahead. The magnitude 7.7 quake hit the country at midday. Israel launched an airstrike on Lebanon on Friday. Military officials say they targeted a Hezbollah drone storage facility in a region they say is a Hezbollah stronghold. And they say they issued an evacuation order before the attack took place. It's the first airstrike into Lebanon by Israel since November. I'm Dale Willman, NPR News.

Dale Wilman opens the episode with a discussion on the recent communication between President Donald Trump and Canada's new Prime Minister, Justin Carney. This marks their first conversation, primarily focusing on the possibility of a trade war between the two nations.
President Trump described the call as "extremely productive," indicating a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue.
Prime Minister Carney emphasized Canada's resilience and unity, stating, "Canada cannot be pushed around. Canada is strong, but we're even stronger when we are united. And our response to these latest tariffs is to fight, to protect and to build."
Negotiations regarding a new bilateral relationship are slated to commence post the Canadian elections scheduled for April 28.

Continuing from Wilman's introduction, the episode delves into a significant legal development where the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that President Trump has the authority to dismiss two members of independent agencies, overturning a lower court's decision to reinstate them.
NPR's Andrea Hsu provides an in-depth analysis:
Fired Members: In January, Trump dismissed Gwen Wilcox from the National Labor Relations Board and in February, Kathy Harris from the Merit Systems Protection Board. Both were Democratic appointees overseeing workplace-related grievances.
Legal Implications: Federal law restricts the president's power to remove agency members solely for cause, such as neglect of duty or malfeasance. This statute has been upheld by the Supreme Court for over 90 years.
Trump Administration's Stance: The administration contends that these legal restrictions are unconstitutional, asserting that the president should have comprehensive control over the executive branch.
Timestamp: 01:52 – 02:44
Dale Wilman reports on the alarming wildfire situation in the South Carolina mountains, where more than 10,000 acres have been consumed by flames amidst increasingly favorable conditions for such disasters.
Reporter Scott Morgan from South Carolina Public Radio highlights:
Fire Incidents: The initial blaze originated at Table Rock Mountain, with a second fire igniting at Persimmon Ridge nearly a week later. Despite extensive efforts, including the deployment of air crews that have released nearly 750,000 gallons of water, containment remains elusive.
Governor's Statement: Governor Henry McMaster expressed the severity of the situation, stating, "We’ve never had quite a fire quite like this. We've had some big ones. You’ve seen the movie The Perfect Storm. Well, this, this might be the perfect fire." (02:21)
Contributing Factors: A combination of dry, windy, and sunny weather, coupled with forest debris, fuels the fires. Additionally, tornado-felled trees from Hurricane Helene are obstructing firefighting efforts, complicating access to affected areas.
Timestamp: 02:44 – 03:28
Dale Wilman transitions to an aviation safety concern near Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., where the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into a near-collision between a Delta commercial jet and a U.S. Air Force jet. This incident mirrors previous tragedies at the same airport, including a commercial jetliner and a military helicopter crash earlier this year.
Concurrently, the episode reports a significant downturn in the stock market:
These declines reflect broad investor concerns amidst ongoing global and national challenges.
Timestamp: 03:28 – 04:03
NPR's Eleanor Beardsley covers the intensified drone assaults in Dnipro, Ukraine, where Russian forces continue to target civilian areas. The latest attacks have resulted in at least four fatalities and 15 injuries.
Immediate Impact: A drone strike caused a roof to collapse in Dnipro, as depicted in a harrowing video where a woman pleads, "Guys, whoever's in Dnipro, can you come help?"
Further Destruction: A multi-functional complex housing restaurants and hotels was hit, exacerbating the casualties and hindering rescue efforts. Firefighters battling the ensuing fires were momentarily overrun by panic, fearing additional strikes, although no secondary attacks occurred.
Timestamp: 04:17 – 04:55
The episode concludes with two significant international events:
Myanmar Earthquake:
Israeli Airstrike on Lebanon:
