In Washington, I'm Jeanine Herbst. President Trump is standing firm on the 25% tariffs on foreign automobile imports, including parts made outside the U.S. nPR's Tamara Keith reports. He's dismissing concerns that this could cause caused prices to rise for American consumers.
Tamara Keith
In a phone interview, NBC's Kristen Welker asked the president whether he was concerned his auto tariffs could cause car prices to go up in the US And Trump said, quote, I couldn't care less because if the prices on foreign cars go up, they're going to buy American cars. A big part of Trump's tariff push is a desire to boost domestic manufacturing. But even cars assembled in the US Often contain parts made in other countries. The president is promising additional tariffs will be announced Wednesday. Economists warn higher tariffs will mean increased costs for consumers. Tamara Keith, NPR News.

We're really hoping that we are looking at enough rain to really make a difference with all that. We are feeling much more optimistic about these fires.
Gerard Albert III
That optimism is a relief for firefighters in North Carolina who are still battling several wildfires in the western part of the state. For NPR News, I'm Jarrett Albert III in Asheville.

Jegil, Alamak and ludraman. These words might not sound instantly familiar, but they were added to the Oxford English Dictionary last week with origins in countries around the world. Jigil is a word to describe the feeling when something is so cute that it gives us the irresistible urge to pinch or squeeze whatever it is we find so adorable. It has origins in Tagalog, a language from the Philippines, one of 11 new words from the country in all. The 42 new words range from around the globe, with others added from Malaysia and Singapore, South Africa and Ireland. Alarmak is a Malay word that conveys surprise or outrage, while ludraman is an Irish word for a lazy or stupid person. Robbie Griffiths, NPR News, London.
