Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman. President Trump continues to say he'll not fire anyone following the disclosure that top security officials discussed sensitive military plans using a private chat application. A journalist was also inadvertently added to that chat. Democratic Senator Mark Warner is the vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee. He says he's outraged over the breach.
Mark Warner
If you had been a traditional military officer or a CIA caseworker and you were this sloppy and careless with this classified information, you would be fired.

Warner was speaking on ABC's this Week. Some Republicans, meanwhile, are now calling for an investigation into the matter. The US Military says rescue teams are making progress in getting a vehicle with four American soldiers inside out of a swamp in Lithuania. The operation has been underway for more than five days. NPR's Juliana Kim reports.

Over the weekend, a U.S. navy dive team arrived in Lithuania to help with the recovery of four U.S. army soldiers. Military officials said the dive team managed to hook a cable to the vehicle, which is submerged in thick mud and water. The goal is to hook several more cables in order to pull the vehicle out. Officials didn't say how long the process will take, but warned it could take some time due to the pressure and suction from the mud. More than 200 military personnel from the U.S. lithuania and Poland are part of the operation. The four soldiers from Fort Stewart in Georgia went missing last Tuesday. Military officials say they've been in contact with their families. Juliana Kim, NPR News.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has refused to hear a last minute attempt to stop billionaire Elon Musk from giving one million dollar checks to two voters. Musk's offer comes as voters prepare to elect a new justice to the Supreme Court. The winner will determine whether the court is a litig liberal or conservative balance. Musk gave out those two million dollar checks this evening. Stock market investors are now bracing for President Trump's latest tariffs deadlines that take place this week. As NPR's Maria Aspen reports, the Dow is down more than 5% this month.

President Trump's stop and start trade war is approaching another green light. He's promised to implement new tariffs on imported cars this week and to impose a wave of what he calls reciprocal tariff. These sweeping taxes are likely to raise the prices consumers pay for a wide range of goods. They've stoked tensions with the country's largest trading partners, and they're making investors and consumers worried about the outlook for the US Economy. Consumers are already cutting back on spending, while a key measure of inflation is rising faster than expected. Meanwhile, consumer sentiment has fallen to its lowest level since 2022. Now, investors are awaiting another big economic report card on Friday when the government publishes its monthly jobs. Maria Aspen, NPR News, New York.

And you're listening to NPR News. President Trump says he's angry with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and he says he'll impose secondary tariffs of 25 to 50% on buyers of Russian oil if he feels Moscow is blocking his efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Trump has expressed frustration at his inability to negotiate a ceasefire in the fighting. Any tariffs on Russian oil would primarily affect China and India, which are Russia's biggest customers. Weather warnings are still in effect for parts of the northern U.S. and Ontario as a spring storm brought freezing rain to the Great Lakes region this weekend. As Dan Karpenchuk reports, more than 300,000 people in the area are still without power.

An Ontario utility crew said Sunday afternoon that they'd begun restoring power, but that tens of thousands remained in the dark as temperatures dropped. The storm covered the region with ice, bringing down tree branches and power lines and creating treacherous driving conditions in Ontario. Most of the electricity outages were in cottage country, an area north and east of Toronto and as far east as Kingston. In Quebec, there are areas that saw an accumulation of about half an inch of ice and where freezing rain is still in the forecast warnings have been extended to the east coast, where freezing rain and snow are expected to continue. For NPR News, I'm Dan Carpentuk in Toronto.

The Jason Statham thriller A Working man took the top spot at North American theaters this weekend, bringing in $15.2 million in ticket sales. The big receipts were a surprise to the movie industry, which had expected Disney's live action version of Snow White to stay at number one for a second week in a row. Instead, Snow White tanked from its debut weekend, dropping 66% and bringing in just $14.2 million. I'm Dale Willman, NPR News.

NPR News Now: March 31, 2025 – Comprehensive Summary
Host: Dale Willman | Release Date: March 31, 2025
President Trump's Response to Security Leak
In early coverage, Dale Willman reports that President Trump remains steadfast in his decision not to dismiss any officials following the revelation that top security personnel discussed sensitive military strategies on a private chat application. The situation was further complicated when a journalist was inadvertently included in the confidential conversation.
Democratic Backlash
Democratic Senator Mark Warner, the vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, expressed strong condemnation of the security lapse. Speaking on ABC's "This Week," Warner stated, "If you had been a traditional military officer or a CIA caseworker and you were this sloppy and careless with this classified information, you would be fired" (00:37). His remarks underscore the gravity of the breach and call for accountability.
Republican Calls for Investigation
In response to the incident, some Republicans are advocating for a thorough investigation to address the mishandling of classified information. This bipartisan concern highlights the delicate balance between national security and political leadership.
U.S. Military Efforts to Extract Soldiers
Dale Willman introduces a developing story about the U.S. Military's rescue mission in Lithuania, where teams are striving to retrieve four American soldiers trapped in a swamp. NPR correspondent Juliana Kim provides an in-depth report:
“Over the weekend, a U.S. More than 200 military personnel from the U.S., Lithuania, and Poland are part of the operation. The four soldiers from Fort Stewart in Georgia went missing last Tuesday. Military officials say they've been in contact with their families.” (01:06)
The operation has been ongoing for over five days, with significant international cooperation. The resilience and coordination of over 200 military personnel reflect the commitment to ensuring the safety of the missing soldiers.
Wisconsin Supreme Court Decision
In a surprising turn of events, the Wisconsin Supreme Court declined to hear a last-minute appeal aimed at preventing billionaire Elon Musk from distributing one-million-dollar checks to two voters. This move comes as the state gears up to elect a new Supreme Court justice, a position that will determine the court's ideological balance between liberal and conservative factions.
Impact on the Supreme Court Election
Musk's financial support is seen as a strategic effort to influence the upcoming election. By injecting significant funds into voter support, Musk aims to sway the outcome in a direction that aligns with his preferences for the court's future composition.
President Trump's Tariff Plans Affect Markets
NPR's Maria Aspen reports on the escalating economic tensions as President Trump's administration moves forward with new tariff implementations. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has already declined by over 5% this month in anticipation of these measures.
“President Trump's stop and start trade war is approaching another green light. He's promised to implement new tariffs on imported cars this week and to impose a wave of what he calls reciprocal tariffs. These sweeping taxes are likely to raise the prices consumers pay for a wide range of goods. They've stoked tensions with the country's largest trading partners, and they're making investors and consumers worried about the outlook for the U.S. economy. Consumers are already cutting back on spending, while a key measure of inflation is rising faster than expected. Meanwhile, consumer sentiment has fallen to its lowest level since 2022. Now, investors are awaiting another big economic report card on Friday when the government publishes its monthly jobs report.” (02:26)
The proposed tariffs on imported cars and other goods are expected to increase consumer costs and exacerbate existing economic challenges, including rising inflation and reduced consumer confidence. The upcoming jobs report will be closely watched for further indicators of the economic trajectory.
Trump's Threatened Tariffs on Russian Oil
In a stern declaration, President Trump announced his intention to impose secondary tariffs ranging from 25% to 50% on buyers of Russian oil. This move is a retaliatory measure in response to what he perceives as Moscow's obstruction of efforts to secure a ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict.
“President Trump says he's angry with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and he says he'll impose secondary tariffs of 25 to 50% on buyers of Russian oil if he feels Moscow is blocking his efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Trump has expressed frustration at his inability to negotiate a ceasefire in the fighting. Any tariffs on Russian oil would primarily affect China and India, which are Russia's biggest customers.” (03:12)
The proposed tariffs aim to pressure Russia economically by targeting its primary oil markets, potentially complicating international relations and impacting global oil prices.
Spring Storm Brings Freezing Rain
Dan Karpenchuk reports on a powerful spring storm that has wreaked havoc across parts of the northern United States and Ontario, Canada. The storm has resulted in extensive power outages and hazardous conditions.
“An Ontario utility crew said Sunday afternoon that they'd begun restoring power, but that tens of thousands remained in the dark as temperatures dropped. The storm covered the region with ice, bringing down tree branches and power lines and creating treacherous driving conditions in Ontario. Most of the electricity outages were in cottage country, an area north and east of Toronto and as far east as Kingston. In Quebec, there are areas that saw an accumulation of about half an inch of ice and where freezing rain is still in the forecast. Warnings have been extended to the East Coast, where freezing rain and snow are expected to continue.” (03:51)
More than 300,000 individuals in the affected areas remain without power. The icy conditions have not only disrupted daily life but also posed significant safety risks, leading to extended warnings and ongoing recovery efforts.
Jason Statham's Thriller Tops Box Office
Entertainment news highlights a notable shift in moviegoers' preferences this weekend. The action-packed thriller "A Working Man," starring Jason Statham, has claimed the top spot in North American theaters, grossing $15.2 million in ticket sales.

The film saw a 66% decrease from its debut weekend, earning only $14.2 million. This unexpected downturn has surprised many within the movie industry, which had projected sustained success for the fairy tale classic.
